Rome is one of the most ancient centres of European and Mediterranean culture, but also the founding city of modern Europe. In 1957 the Treaties of Rome established what today is the European Union (then the European Communities). Many international organizations dealing with some of Europe’s most important social and political problems are located at this hinge-joint of cultures. Rome is therefore an ideal place for the study of those subjects that constitute the heart and soul of this modern Europe, its history and politics, its economic and social fabric as well as its legal, institutional and organisational framework.

The Master is a one-year postgraduate study programme following the bachelor’s level (see Application Requirements). It is a ten-month full-time programme, structured in two semesters, the first of which runs from the end of September to mid-February, the second from mid-February to the end of June (see Schedule). It is therefore not possible to engage in other activities during the study period; course attendance is compulsory.
The programme consists of five Core Courses and six Elective Courses, divided in two modules: A (History and Politics) and B (Law and Economics). Core and Elective Courses are taking place in both semesters. A Final Dissertation is required in order to complete the Master degree (see Programme Structure). Students who have not acquired during their undergraduate or other studies the academic skills necessary to successfully attend the Master will be required to attend Preliminary Courses in one or more of the Master’s basic subjects during the month of September, including examinations, in order to assure an approximately equal level of all Master’s students at the start of the first semester.
Upon completion of their studies in Rome, students may undertake an Internship within a European Institution, International Organisation or Private Company, if possible within the period following the Master (July to December).
