Privacy notice pursuant to Article 13 of Italian Legislative Decree No. 196 of June 30, 2003

(as well as pursuant to Article 122 of Legislative Decree No. 196 of June 30, 2003, and the General Provision of the Italian Data Protection Authority of May 8, 2014)

1. What are cookies?

Cookies are small text files that websites you visit send to your device (usually your browser). They are stored there and then sent back to those same websites the next time you visit.

 While browsing a particular website, users may receive on their device both cookies from the website they are visiting (known as “first-party” cookies) and cookies sent from different websites or web servers (known as “third-party” cookies). These third-party cookies may contain elements such as images, maps, sounds, specific links to pages on other domains, multimedia content, and more, which are displayed on the website the user is visiting.

Cookies can generally be used for various purposes, such as performing computer authentication, tracking browsing sessions, storing information about specific configurations regarding users accessing the server, profiling, storing preferences, and more.

2. First-party cookies: features and purposes

First-party cookies are cookies that are installed on the user’s device and managed directly by us through this website.

While browsing our Site, information may be collected through what are known as “technical cookies.”

Technical cookies are used solely to “carry out the transmission of a communication over an electronic communications network, or to the extent strictly necessary for the provider of an information society service explicitly requested by the subscriber or user to provide that service” (see Article 122, paragraph 1, of Italian Legislative Decree 196/2003).

Navigation or session cookies

The technical cookies installed through our site include:

  • so-called navigation or session cookies, which are necessary to access the services, forms, and restricted areas of the site, as well as to optimize the efficiency of web pages by speeding up their loading;
  • Functionality cookies, which allow our website to remember certain user choices (such as language preferences) to provide a more personalized and optimized browsing experience (for example, displaying content descriptions in the user’s preferred language).

Technical cookies aren’t essential for our website to function, but they enhance its quality, the browsing experience, and the use of certain services. Consequently, if you do not accept these cookies, the performance and functionality of http://www.luiss.it may be reduced, and access to certain content and services could even be severely limited.

Under current regulations, the use of these cookies and the associated processing do not require the user’s prior consent. However, users can choose to refuse the installation of these cookies through their browser settings.

Below are the characteristics and purposes of using technical cookies:

3. “Third-party” cookies

While browsing the Site, in addition to the cookies that may be installed on your device through the Site, you may also receive cookies sent from different sites or web servers with which we have entered into direct agreements (known as “third parties”) or indirect agreements (known as intermediaries). These sites or servers may host certain elements (such as images, maps, sounds, or specific links to pages on other domains) that appear on the Site.

In this regard, the following types of cookies can be mentioned:

  • Analytics: These are cookies used to collect and analyze statistical information about the number of users and visits to the website. Disabling these third-party cookies does not affect your ability to use the site;
  • Advertising: This category includes cookies used to deliver advertising services within a specific website. Disabling these third-party cookies does not affect your use of the site;
  • Widgets/Plugins: Some widgets and plugins provided by social networks (such as the LinkedIn button or the ability to watch YouTube videos directly on the website the user is browsing) may use their own cookies to enhance interaction with the relevant site. Disabling these cookies does not affect your use of the site, except for the ability to quickly share content and/or view multimedia content on the site itself.

Some third-party cookies may also be used for user profiling purposes and, therefore, to collect information about the preferences expressed by the user while browsing the Internet. For more details about third parties that use their own cookies, including for profiling purposes, see the table below.

If you do not wish to receive third-party cookies on your device, you can access the privacy notices and consent forms of these third parties via the links below and opt out of receiving them.

Below are the third-party cookies installed through the Site, along with their features and purposes, as well as updated links to their respective policies and consent forms:

Third-party analytics cookies

This site uses Google Analytics to collect information about how visitors use the site, including the number of visitors, the sites they came from, and the pages they visited on our website. This information is generally used to improve our website. For example, it allows us to learn about any errors users encounter and to ensure they can navigate quickly and easily find what they are looking for.

With your consent, Luiss may also use these cookies to create user profiles and send advertising messages that align with the preferences you’ve shown while browsing the web. Furthermore, it cannot be ruled out that Google Analytics may “enrich” or “cross-reference” these cookies with other information it holds.

The information obtained through Google Analytics cookies (including IP addresses) is transmitted from the user’s browser to Google, headquartered at 1600 Amphitheatre Parkway, Mountain View, CA 94043, United States, in accordance with its terms of service.

For the processing of personal data that Google may carry out through these cookies with your consent, click on the links below and choose whether or not to give your consent:

<p >third-party profiling cookies
  • Some pages on this site have buttons for sharing content on the social networks Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. On our site, advertising banners or links to social networks are simple links to third-party sites. However, it's possible that the third-party site may install profiling cookies. In these cases, the third-party site may send cookies governed by its own terms and privacy policy. Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn may use cookies to facilitate content sharing on social networks or to compile access statistics. Luiss does not use these cookies to profile data subjects.
  • Additionally, the Facebook Pixel cookie is installed, enabling Luiss to track conversions that occur on our site as a result of the ads it is running on Facebook. For example, if you want to track sign-ups for a specific campaign advertised on Facebook, the cookie notifies Facebook each time a user signs up for that campaign on our site. Facebook compares the conversion event with the group of people who were shown the ad or who clicked on it. This provides Luiss with information that helps it understand the return on investment for its advertising spend. Luiss does not use this cookie to profile the data subject; it is used solely for statistical purposes.
  • Our site also features embedded content from other third-party platforms and social networks, including YouTube, Storify, Flickr, Formstack, and SurveyMonkey. In these cases, the third-party site may send cookies governed by its own terms and privacy policy. On our site (first-party site), banner ads or links to social networks are simple links to third-party sites. However, it's possible that the third-party site may install profiling cookies.
  • Finally, Luiss uses the Google AdWords online advertising program and Google Remarketing technology, both managed by Google Inc. (hereinafter “Google”). To measure the conversion rate with Google AdWords, a conversion tracking cookie is saved each time a user clicks on one of our ads provided by Google (known as “Ads”). These cookies last for 30 days and are not used to identify individuals personally. Google uses a different cookie for each Google AdWords customer and does not combine the data generated by these cookies with any other data. If a user clicks on one of our ads, visits a page with a conversion tag, and the cookie hasn't expired yet, the conversion is recorded. Thanks to the conversion tracking cookie, we can determine the total number of conversions and thereby monitor the performance of our ads.

When a user clicks on one of our ads, a Google Remarketing cookie is stored on their device. This cookie is used to show our ads later when the user browses pages on the Google Display Network. Remarketing cookies last for 30 days and are not used to identify individuals personally.

Google cookies are those that start with “__ut.” The user can expressly refuse the display of targeted ads by Google by following the instructions outlined in the section below, “How to disable cookies.”
