Luiss Research Day – Antitrust in Digital Markets
The digital sector is currently dominated by a small number of large companies, whose impact on people's lives has significantly expanded. These companies control digital ecosystems that encompass numerous products and services, aiming to meet the diverse needs of consumers across a wide range of markets. For example, Google offers around 70 products on its platform, including popular services like maps and general search, various shopping search engines, cloud services, and artificial intelligence tools. As these digital conglomerates interact with customers within their ecosystems, they collect personal data directly. The wealth of data sources in digital markets allows data intermediaries to segment data across several dimensions—such as demographics, interests, and locations—and then auction it off to potential buyers. This data holds significant value for third-party websites and software applications, enabling them to provide personalized deals or services. The discussion on how conglomerates use the data collected in digital markets is highly relevant to society. It has recently drawn the attention of competition authorities and regulators.
The 2024 Luiss Research Day will bring together academics, practitioners, and enforcers who are at the forefront of analyzing digital markets across the globe. The distinguished guest of the event will be Jean Tirole, the 2014 Nobel Prize laureate in Economics.
