Registration is now open for the Digital Pools, where you can learn to swim
A “digital pool” where you can learn to swim by writing the code of the future. It's called 42 Roma Luiss, the new coding school for digital talents that will open its doors next January to 150 students aged 18 to 35. Requirements: a passion for computer programming and a willingness to take on an innovative challenge. The university named after Guido Carli will be the trailblazer in Italy for this new educational model. Established in Paris as École42 and now present in over 20 cities worldwide, its goal is to train a new generation of young innovators who can lead the transition to the digital industry.
According to the latest Eurostat survey data, the digital skills landscape among Italians under 25 is critical: our country ranks third from the bottom in Europe, ahead only of Bulgaria and Romania. This scenario could slow down our country's economic growth, widen the already significant digital divide, and leave young people without the digital and programming skills needed to make a difference. Therefore, it is crucial to promote initiatives that make a significant impact in this area.
But how does the 42 Roma Luiss model work? It's based on a peer-to-peer educational approach, allowing young people to learn through hands-on experience, by doing activities and learning from their mistakes. There are no tuition fees, and no academic credentials are required: selection is based solely on one's abilities. There are three tests to pass, known as the “Pools,” which, from next October through December 2020, will select 150 of the most deserving students to “swim in the boundless digital ocean.”
In fact, 42 students won't take traditional exams; instead, they'll tackle real-world problems, learning from the start to collaborate and think outside the box. Instead of traditional lectures, students will engage in a series of interconnected projects that simulate real-world work scenarios.
“With the opening of 42, Luiss is bringing a completely disruptive educational model to Italy. This will allow its students, who are agents of change, to learn the secrets of the digital world for free. They can then contribute to the technological transformation underway in our country and, with resources and talents prepared for the future, meet the great innovation challenge that lies ahead,” said Giovanni Lo Storto, the University’s General Director. He added, “This revolutionary school, which enables the development of digital expertise, will initially launch in Rome, with the goal of expanding to other Italian cities, including those in the South.”
42 Roma Luiss, which has just opened its enrollment, counts as its first supporter Riccardo Zacconi, Chairman of King, a leading online gaming company and creator of global hits like Candy Crush Saga, and a Luiss alumnus. “École 42 is a project created in France to train individuals for digital careers, enabling them to compete internationally. Over three years, students learn to program at a level that will enable them to work for cutting-edge technology companies or even start their own businesses. The school is free, and the only admission criteria are being between 18 and 35 years old and passing a logic test. The 42 project in Paris has been so successful that, thanks to the strong sense of giving back among numerous digital entrepreneurs, it has been exported to 20 countries around the world. Among its many locations, there is also one in Silicon Valley. Luiss Guido Carli University has reached an agreement to launch École 42 in Italy. The first location will be in Rome, with the launch scheduled for January 2021. The selection process has already begun in recent days. It's a project I strongly believe in and am personally investing in alongside Luiss. I want the 150 students who attend the school each year to become digital leaders and achieve international success. I'll do everything I can to help them.”
