Artificial Intelligence enters the classroom: Luiss and Google team up to reshape the learning experience in the AI era
Rome, March 10, 2026 – A focus on educational excellence and the new frontier of artificial intelligence as a multiplier of human capabilities: this is the vision of a new digital humanism presented today by Luiss and Google during the event “Reimagine the Learning Experience at Luiss.”
Today, the Viale Roma campus hosted the presentation of an educational model that is one of a kind in Italy. In this model, AI doesn’t replace individuals; rather, it complements and enhances their intuition, critical thinking, and skills. This synergy is formalized through an agreement that will shape an innovative learning experience based on complementarity: the university will lead an innovation process through cutting-edge educational and scientific design, while Google will serve as a technology enabler. The goal will be to provide tools to steer a transformation that is cultural and organizational first, and then technical.
Luiss Rector Paolo Boccardelli underscored the initiative's value: “Universities must equip young people with the tools they need to interpret complexity and manage the technological revolution effectively and responsibly. Artificial intelligence is already widespread in all work and research settings. The central theme is governance and the ability to identify its risks while maximizing its opportunities. With this new agreement, Luiss is bolstering the methodological and scientific direction of its educational framework, recognizing Google's solutions as the tangible foundation for new learning models.”
The operational framework of the agreement was defined by the Luiss Vice-Rector for Teaching and Learning, Enzo Peruffo, who explained: “The goal of this agreement is to reach an understanding with Google to provide the academic community with a tool that can support students and faculty in developing the creativity, critical thinking, and skills needed to navigate the challenges posed by the digital transition and the major trends that are revolutionizing the world of work.” Peruffo then added: “In the age of artificial intelligence, Luiss is simultaneously bolstering its focus on the humanities: technology is an enabler, but it primarily serves to enhance the quality of liberal arts education, expanding students’ abilities to interpret, argue, and make judgments.”
The agreement reached between the University named after Guido Carli and Google has four main focuses: they will work together to rethink how courses are designed and delivered in the area of Teaching, and to enhance the student learning experience in the area of Learning. In terms of Research, the collaboration will focus on promoting analysis of AI’s impact on educational processes. For Productivity, the goal will be to support the evolution of the University’s internal roles, optimizing quality and organizational capacity.
Subsequently, the Vice-Rector for Artificial Intelligence and Digital Skills, Giuseppe Italiano, delved into the connection between innovation and education, outlining the role of AI as a strategic accelerator for the development of digital skills and a data culture in academia. This perspective is shared by Colin Marson, Director of EMEA & Asia Pacific at Google for Education, who stated: “Technology shines when it helps people reach their full potential. We're excited to begin collaborating with Luiss to bring AI tools into the classroom. These tools will help students ask better questions, develop critical thinking, and leverage those uniquely human skills that will shape their future.”
Afterward, a workshop hosted by Google demonstrated the initial practical applications of these tools across various disciplines, including business strategy, statistics, political science, and law. The experimentation ranged from simulators for active understanding of course topics to tutors for guided exercise completion, as well as agents to support students in idea generation, group work, and legal simulations.
The agreement fits seamlessly into a series of initiatives already launched by the Luiss Teaching & Learning Innovation Hub. The agreement between the Free International University of Social Studies and Google, in fact, allows for future developments, such as support for Innovation Grants—innovative educational projects aimed at the faculty; the launch of a Google help desk dedicated to students and faculty; and the company’s direct involvement in orientation days for first-year master’s students, to equip them with the most advanced tools from the moment they enter the university.
