An award to combat water waste: the 12th edition of the Non Sprecare Award

Water is a precious resource, and Italy is wasting it. Our country, with a water capacity that ranks it among the world's most abundant, is also the one with the highest consumption in Europe, using more water than nature can replenish. To keep the spotlight on these issues and help protect a resource that’s vital for people, their activities, and the environment, Luiss Guido Carli is once again partnering with the Premio Non Sprecare. This competition for sustainable ideas was created by Antonio Galdo, the founder and director of the website Non sprecare.it. Now in its 12th edition, the initiative is aimed at various categories—companies, institutions, associations, schools and universities, young people (under 35), and startups—with the goal of gathering and promoting best practices to reduce waste. To participate in the next edition, you can submit your proposal no later than October 30, 2021.

Our planet is urgently calling for us to take action to protect and enhance it, by accelerating the green transition and promoting a new sustainability paradigm that is more resilient to future changes and capable of combining deep respect for the environment with more conscious lifestyles. In this context of global emergency, the Non Sprecare Award serves as a roadmap to immediately guide the energy, choices, and actions of each of us, as well as those of the younger generations,” stated Giovanni Lo Storto, General Director of Luiss Guido Carli. “ There is no better investment in taking responsibility for our future than being active and conscious agents of change.”

“Our water resources encompass 7,494 waterways, 347 lakes, and over 1,000 underground aquifers—reservoirs of pristine water. With these figures and 302 billion cubic meters of rainwater falling each year, we are the country with the most water in Europe,” stated Antonio Galdo. He continued, “ But in Italy, we have a record of individual waste, with household consumption of 241 liters of water per capita per year—100 more than in France and Germany—plus an annual consumption of 221 liters of mineral water per person. We rank third in the world, behind Saudi Arabia, a country with virtually no water, and Mexico, one of the most polluted nations globally. Again, this waste indicates a lack of awareness of the resources we have and a low level of responsibility in how we use them.”

Over the course of the various editions, an increasing number of submitted projects have received awards for the quality of their initiatives, a clear sign of growing social mobilization. An award for those who don't waste and who teach others not to waste. Participants will initially be selected by web users, and in a second phase, a jury of experts will decide on the two winners: one Italian and one from abroad.
