Christian Georg Maximilian Joppke

Christian Joppke is Professor of Sociology in the Political Science Department at Luiss University, Rome. Previously, he taught at the University of Southern California (Los Angeles), the European University Institute (Florence), the University of British Columbia (Vancouver), the International University of Bremen, the American University of Paris, and the University of Bern, where he held the chair in general sociology from 2010 to 2025. He also held honorary and visiting professorships at Aarhus University, Central European University (Budapest), the Interdisciplinary Center (IDC, Herzliya), and SciencesPo (Paris), as well as research and visiting fellowships at Georgetown University (Washington, D.C.), the Russell Sage Foundation (New York), Nanyang Technological University (Singapore), and the Hamburg Institute for Social Research. He was a member of the German Expert Council on Integration and Migration (SVR) from 2015 to 2020. Joppke studied at the Free University of Berlin and the University of Frankfurt (where he was a doctoral student of Jürgen Habermas), and holds a PhD in sociology from the University of California, Berkeley (1989). Specialising in comparative political sociology, he has written extensively and influentially on social movements, immigration, citizenship, multiculturalism, religion, nationalism, and more recently on populism and (neo)liberalism. His latest books are Neoliberal Nationalism: Immigration and the Rise of the Populist Right (Cambridge University Press, 2021) and Political Neoliberalism: Order and Rupture (Oxford University Press, 2025).
