Gli Ingannati is a light-hearted comedy written in the 16th century. It premiered in Siena during the 1532 Carnival and was met with such great popular acclaim that it was translated into many languages and even inspired William Shakespeare to write Twelfth Night.
Directly linked to the Commedia dell'Arte and its characters, the play tells the story of the young Leila. To escape an arranged marriage her father, Virginio, has arranged with the elderly Gherardo, she disguises herself as a man and, under the name Renato, enters the service of the knight Flaminio, with whom she is madly in love. But Flaminio, in turn, is infatuated with Isabella, Gherardo's daughter, who, however, rejects him because she has fallen head over heels for… Renato! To complicate matters, Leila's twin brother Fabrizio arrives in town. Everyone had thought he was missing after the sack of Rome by the Landsknechts. A comedy of misunderstandings where the stories of pages and maids, Spanish knights, and abbess mothers intertwine in a whirlwind of hilarious mishaps. The performance is enhanced by a soundtrack, sung entirely live, that features some of the most famous Italian songs from the 1960s and 1970s. A Renaissance plot revisited in a contemporary setting that doesn't diminish its comedy; in fact, we hope it enhances its potential. Enjoy!
