Luiss Theatre Workshop 2026/2027 - Romeo + Juliet – Rock Opera
This year, the Luiss Theatre Course celebrates 25 years of activity – a journey that has involved hundreds of students and Luiss management, fostering a community capable of renewing itself season after season.
To mark this anniversary, the Course is once again taking on one of William Shakespeare's most famous and frequently performed plays: Romeo and Juliet, which Luiss students previously staged in 2019 in the gardens of the Viale Pola Campus. The new production pays tribute to the history of the University's theatre project and to the generations of students who have been part of it over the years.
In this contemporary, rock-infused reinterpretation, Shakespeare's tragedy moves away from the traditional imagery to immerse itself in the frenetic pace and tensions of a modern metropolis. Drawing inspiration also from Baz Luhrmann's celebrated film adaptation, the Capulets and Montagues become two opposing forces, divided by a rivalry that cuts through the city and its streets.
At the heart of it all remains the love of Romeo and Juliet, fragile yet absolute, while Shakespeare's verses are complemented by the energy of Queen's songs, performed live by the students.
Theatre, music, and movement come together in a production where Elizabethan poetry engages in dialogue with the language of rock, bringing out all the contemporary power of a timeless story.
