Luiss promotes digital well-being with LockBox
An initiative to promote focus and social interaction
Luiss is the first university in Europe to introduce LockBox, an app that encourages “disconnection” to foster a deeper connection with real life.
The app lets you temporarily block certain apps on your smartphone—those you find most distracting—so you can start digital detox sessions. To end your session, simply hold your smartphone close to one of the boxes located throughout the university and library spaces.
Offline time becomes real value
Every minute you use LockBox, you earn digital coins that can be redeemed for prizes and discounts at bars, restaurants, gyms, and many other places, thanks to the extensive network of partners who have chosen to support the initiative.
The initiative stems from an idea by Giulia Violati, a Luiss alumna, and Simone D’Amico, a researcher at the Digital Wellness Lab at Harvard Medical School, with the aim of responsibly combining technology and well-being.
“LockBox is a significant step toward healthier, more balanced digital use. It’s not just an app; it’s a different way of experiencing your time. Our goal is to make people aware that our time is not endless and shouldn't necessarily be wasted on social media platforms doing doomscrolling. With this tool, we want to help students manage their time instead of letting social media control it,”says Giulia Violati.
A new component of the 2025–2028 Integrated Sustainability Plan
“With LockBox, Luiss is adding a new component to the initiatives outlined in the 2025–2028 Integrated Sustainability Plan,” says Emiliana De Blasio, the university’s Advisor for Diversity, Inclusion, and Sustainability.
“Disconnecting with a simple click,” De Blasio continues, “not only means getting rid of distractions, but also promoting a more mindful use of technology, reducing consumption and environmental impact. Through social interaction and healthy competition, LockBox makes a difference in students’ daily lives, strengthening the cohesion and inclusiveness of the Luiss community.”
