Recognition of a course taken at a university summer school abroad

Recognition of a course taken at a university summer school abroad

Recognition of a course

A student attending a Summer School course held entirely at a university abroad between June and August 2026 may request recognition of a single elective course in their study plan, with the credits counting toward the total required to obtain their degree.

Types of courses that can be recognized

Each student can request recognition for a single course within each study cycle, replacing one of the elective courses in their study plan. Therefore, it will not be possible to obtain validation for required courses or language courses.
Elective courses are part of your curriculum, and passing them is required to earn your degree.

The recognized course will be recorded in the student’s academic record with its title in the original language and the number of credits specified in the student’s program for elective courses.

It is the student’s responsibility to verify in advance that the program of the course for which recognition is requested is not, at the time of its addition to the student’s academic record, similar to another course already present or to be added to the student’s academic record. Otherwise, the Summer School recognition will be revoked.

The elective course is recognized as part of the program of study in which the student is enrolled at the time of participating in the Summer School.

If the request is submitted by a student enrolled in a three-year program, they cannot request recognition of an elective course from a master's degree program. This also applies to students who have already completed their three-year degree and are not enrolled in or have not started a master's degree program.

Students enrolled at Luiss following an incoming transfer from another university will not be able to request recognition for any Summer Schools taken during the summer prior to the start of their classes at Luiss.

As an alternative to having an elective course recognized, a course taken abroad can be recognized as credits for other activities or as an independent course taken abroad.
Elective courses are additional courses that students can add to their program to enhance their education. If taken abroad, the grade does not count toward the grade point average.

Recognition procedures

  1. Recognition of a pre-approved course

  2. Request for new recognition

Requirements for recognition

The course for which recognition is requested must meet the following requirements. To satisfy these, a student may attend more than one course in Summer School; otherwise, the recognition will be canceled:

  • The course must be consistent with the overall curriculum. Language courses cannot be recognized, nor can they be used to meet the minimum required credit count.

  • Equivalent number of credits (only for Summer Schools that award credits). Proposals with a credit difference exceeding 1 ECTS for 6-credit Luiss elective courses will not be accepted. The difference cannot exceed 2 credits for 8-credit Luiss elective courses.

  • If no credits are awarded, the number of hours of in-person instruction must be equivalent.

  • Minimum duration of two weeks.

  • Provision of a final assessment (other than pass/fail) that is not based solely on attendance and class participation.

  • Issuance of a certificate (transcript of records) for the exam taken in the Summer School, indicating the period in which the Summer School was held, the number of credits (only for Summer Schools that award credits), the number of hours of classroom instruction, the type of final exam, the grade, and the grading system of the host university.

When evaluating proposals, the Study Area Delegate may also consider the university’s reputation and past experience.

The assessment of a course’s requirements for recognition is conducted based on individual student requests, ensuring equal treatment for all students during the relevant academic year.

Final recognition

  • Completing the recognition form

Upon completion of the Summer School and by October 31, 2026, the student must complete the following form, indicating the course taken abroad for which recognition approval was obtained by June 15, 2026, or which is on the list of pre-approved courses.

  • How to submit the Transcript of Records to the International Student Mobility Office

After completing a newly approved or pre-approved course abroad by June 15 and passing the corresponding exam, students must submit their Transcript of Records—containing all required information—to the International Student Mobility Office by October 31, 2026, to obtain final recognition of the exam.

If the certificate is in electronic format, it must be sent by the host university to riconoscimentosummerschool@luiss.it, or it must have an electronic authentication system if the student submits it to the office directly. Otherwise, it will not be accepted.

Transcripts submitted via dedicated online platforms provided by certain foreign universities (such as the London School of Economics) will also be accepted.

  • Grade conversion

Upon receiving the recognition form and the transcript of records, the International Student Mobility office will convert the grade and notify you via your university email.

You can request the conversion tables by sending an email to riconoscimentosummerschool@luiss.it.

You can decline the conversion of grades below 30 by replying to the email within 72 hours of receiving it. After this period, if no objection is received, the grade will be considered accepted and forwarded to the Student Affairs Office for the course, credits, and grade to be recorded in the student’s academic record.

The conversion is final. If the conversion is not satisfactory, the only option will be to decline recognition. The conversion process may take approximately four weeks from the receipt of the transcript of records.

  • Recording the course in the student's academic record

<p style="line-height:14.0pt;">Once the conversion process is complete, the International Student Mobility office notifies the Student Affairs Office of the decision. Registration typically occurs within 15 business days of receiving the decision.

Please note: Upon return, you cannot obtain recognition for a course that differs from the one requested before departure or that is not on the pre-approved list for your field and level.

If all the rules and conditions specified in the Regulations on the recognition in 2026 of a course attended at a summer school at a university abroad are not met, it will not be possible to proceed with the registration of the exam in the student’s academic record.

Recognition of an elective course taken abroad

To have a “free course taken abroad” recognized, you must complete the appropriate form and email it to riconoscimentosummerschool@luiss.it by October 31, 2026. Upon returning from the Summer School, the course will be recorded in your academic record with its original title and the grade you earned. This grade will not count toward your GPA at Luiss.

Recognition of credits for “other activities”

Alternatively, or if a course is not recognized, a student attending a Summer School course at a university abroad can request credits under “Other activities” by following the procedures set by their respective School.
