Programme features

The Double Degree in International Relations, Security and Development with the University of Sussex offers an innovative educational pathway that combines an analysis of international security dynamics with the study of global transformations and development challenges.

The programme equips students with multidisciplinary skills to understand and address key issues in global politics, ranging from environmental and humanitarian crises to conflicts and emerging threats to international security.

The University of Sussex (Brighton, United Kingdom) is internationally recognised for the excellence of its programmes in this field and was ranked number one in the world for Development Studies in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2025. During their second year at Sussex, students will have the opportunity to study within one of only four dedicated International Relations departments in the UK, renowned worldwide for its critical approach to security and development issues.

The MA in Conflict, Security and Development explores the intricate relationships between security, insecurity, and global development through topics such as war and armed interventions, global health and poverty, environmental degradation, and international crises. Students will gain theoretical tools and critical perspectives that will enable them to interpret contemporary crises in innovative ways and to address them while taking into account the power relations between the Global North and the Global South.

Graduates of the programme will develop a thorough understanding of the political, economic, security, and environmental dimensions of global development, acquiring the skills needed to operate in complex international contexts and to contribute to the promotion of sustainable and equitable solutions. Both pathways foster analytical rigour, intercultural skills, and a nuanced understanding of the challenges that define the contemporary world. The dual degree and interdisciplinary profile provide preparation that is particularly well suited to careers in international organisations, NGOs, public administrations, think tanks, and institutions involved in public policy development.
