Students with Foreign Qualifications - Admission Requirements for Master's Degrees

Admission requirements for students with foreign qualifications

Admission to master’s degree programs is contingent upon the degree qualifying students for enrollment at Italian universities, as per ministerial requirements.

The Ministry of Universities and Research (MUR) sets the criteria and guidelines annually. Please note that Luiss University strictly adheres to the mentioned guidelines and will not accept qualifications that do not meet the requirements indicated on this webpage.

For foreign academic credentials, admission will require submitting the documentation requested by the Admissions Office. This is to verify that the credentials in question allow the holder to enroll in a master’s degree program in Italy under the current regulations.

Please note that academic qualifications that do not comply with the guidelines and are not accompanied by the required documentation will not allow university enrollment under any circumstances, including in the case of admission and subsequent registration for attendance.

Candidates are reminded that it is their responsibility to check in advance whether their academic qualification entitles them to enroll in a master's degree program. Candidates are also responsible for fulfilling all obligations related to obtaining student visas and for verifying the requirements to access the University's premises, in accordance with the relevant regulations in force.

To check the documents required for enrollment based on your qualification, you can refer to the list below. If you have any questions, you can always contact ammissione@luiss.it.

INFORMATION APPLICABLE TO ALL QUALIFICATIONS

Pursuant to Ministry of Education, Universities and Research (MIUR) regulations, qualifications awarded abroad grant access to master’s degree programs at an Italian university only if they:

  • have been awarded upon completion of a first-level degree program lasting at least 3 academic years (or 4 academic years, depending on the relevant school system);

  • entitle the student to enroll in graduate programs in the foreign country that awarded the degree;

  • have been awarded by official universities within that foreign country’s education system. If the awarding institution is not the same as the teaching institution, both must be accredited and recognized by the relevant ministry of education in their home country and in the country whose education system they follow;

  • the Diploma is not a professional or vocational qualification

Furthermore, if the documentation issued by the competent authority indicates that the qualification awarded is professional in nature, it will not be considered eligible for admission to Master’s Degrees in Italy.

To be eligible for enrollment in Italian master’s degree programs, qualifications must be comparable to the corresponding Italian qualification not only in duration but also in the content of the academic program. Since professional and vocational qualifications do not have the same content and scope as the corresponding Italian qualification, they are not considered eligible for enrollment in Italian master’s degrees (“Laurea Magistrale” – duration: two academic years), but only in “First-level” master’s courses (“Master di primo livello” – duration: one year).

In university systems that offer both Ordinary Bachelor’s and Honors Bachelor’s degrees, please note that only Honors Bachelor’s degrees will qualify for admission to Master’s degrees in Italy.
