Curricular internships - Student FAQ
A curricular internship is any internship undertaken as a student, whether it's required by the curriculum, intended for thesis preparation, or unrelated to the degree program.
It is intended for all students who are formally enrolled in bachelor's, master's, and single-cycle degree programs, as well as in master's and doctoral programs, and must be completed before the degree is awarded.
An extracurricular internship is one completed by a graduate who is not enrolled in another ministerial program of study. It is intended for all graduates, master's degree holders, and PhD holders.
Generally, a student can complete up to 6 months of a “mandatory” internship (with credits) and/or an “optional” internship (without credits) at one or more institutions or employers before their graduation date.
To earn credit, students must complete a minimum number of hours, which varies based on the number of credits specified in their curriculum (1 credit = 25 hours of internship).
To find out the minimum duration of the mandatory internship, check your study plan via Web Self-Service.
Therefore, after completing the required curricular internship, you can undertake a curricular internship without credit at any other institution or with any other employer.
To find internship opportunities in Italy and abroad, you can apply for open positions, view company profiles, and attend employer meetings, all featured on the Career Center portal.
Of course, you can always apply independently through the employers' portals by visiting the “Work with us” or “Careers” sections.
To ensure an effective application, a team of dedicated advisors specializing in various professional fields is available to help students create and revise their CVs. You can upload the most recent version of your CV to your online profile and use it for applications in the Career Center. To book Career Guidance and CV Check sessions, visit the Appointments section of the Career Center.
As stipulated in the Curricular Internship Regulations (Article 9), “the internship activity must be consistent with the student's course of study. Activities related to militancy or political or civil activism are not recognized as curricular internships. It is not advisable to undertake curricular internships if there are family ties or close relationships between students and the owners of the host companies, as this would diminish the value of the educational experience.”
The host institution or employer must request the activation of the internship online at least 5 working days before the start, following the instructions on the Curricular Internship Activation Request page. Students cannot submit the activation request.
What are the different steps in the process? Check out the infographic.
Each request generates an SR identification code that is immediately sent to the host institution/employer’s email address, and then to the student’s email address (nome.cognome@studenti.luiss.it) along with a summary of the data entered.
The host institution/employer, and subsequently the student/intern, is responsible for carefully checking all data entered. After this check, no further changes can be made.
In particular, you will need to verify that the number of credits (CFU) matches what is listed in your study plan. If you have any questions, please check Web Self-Service.
If changes are needed, please email tirocinicurriculari@luiss.it and include the host employer/organization in the CC.
An internship can be terminated early at the request of either the employer or host organization, or the student or intern, provided there is prior communication and agreement between the parties.
To do so, simply send an email to the Career Service office (tirocinicurriculari@luiss.it) with the following requirements:
- send the request on the same day as the interruption
- CC the student/employer (whichever party is sending the communication)
- Include in the subject line “Interruption + Student's Last Name, First Name + Host Organization + SR Code” (e.g., Interruption Rossi Mario Holdings spa SR0000).
To earn credit hours (CFU), you must complete a minimum number of hours, which varies based on the number of CFU required by your curriculum (1 CFU = 25 hours of internship). These credit hours are always awarded at the end of the internship, based on the expected completion date specified in the training project.
Within 14 days, and only if you complete the required final evaluations for the employer or host organization and for the intern, the internship will undergo final validation by the Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs and the Student Affairs Office. This allows the credits to be registered and subsequently viewed in Web Self-Service.
For the purposes of calculating the score for selection in the call for applications for International Exchange Programs with European (Erasmus+) and non-European countries, credits from internships are not counted among the credits obtained or those to be obtained. A value is assigned, calculated as one-eighth (1/8) of the total weight of the credits earned through the internship, and this is added directly to the weighted average.
For these credits to be considered for selection, they must be registered in your academic record by the end of the winter exam session (to find the exact deadline for registering credits, please refer to the call for applications).
Please note: To ensure your credits are recognized within the specified timeframe, it's crucial to consider the minimum duration of the internship and the time required for credit recognition. With this in mind, it is advisable to complete the internship by around the first half of December, making sure to verify that the credits are recorded in your academic record.
In any case, students are responsible for closely monitoring that the entire process of activating and recognizing credits is completed, and that the credits are recorded on the Web Self Service (see the infographic) no later than the date specified in the call.
To earn credits, students must complete a minimum number of hours, which varies based on the number of credits required by the curriculum (1 credit = 25 hours of internship). Credits are always awarded at the end of the internship, so based on the planned completion date specified in the training project. Within 14 days of the completion date, credits are only recorded on the transcript if the final evaluations required for the employer/host institution and for the trainees/interns have been completed. The internship will then undergo final validation by the Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs and the Student Affairs Office for the recording of the credits, which can then be viewed in Web Self-Service.
Regarding the recognition of credits for work or extracurricular internships arranged through other sponsoring entities (e.g., the Employment Center, Sportello Stage, etc.), it is possible to obtain credit recognition after verification. You will need to send your request to tirocinicurriculari@luiss.it, attaching your employment contract or extracurricular training project.
To earn the credits, you must complete a minimum number of hours, which varies based on the number of credits in your curriculum (1 credit = 25 hours of internship). The credits are always awarded at the end of the internship, so they depend on the expected completion date listed in your training plan.
However, once you've reached the minimum number of hours required to earn the credits, you can only request early recognition in the following two cases:
- If the applicant needs to earn the credits to obtain the degree, they must have the status of a graduating student (which can be obtained by submitting a Graduation Application via the Web Self-Service portal);
- The need to obtain the credits to participate in competitions or calls for applications outside the University.
The request for early recognition of credits must be sent via email to tirocinicurriculari@luiss.it and must include the following information:
- In the subject line, enter “SR Code + Early recognition of credits + Student's last name and first name” (e.g., SR0000 Early recognition of credits Rossi Mario);
- Specify your status, if you are a graduating student;
- Specify any external competition or call for applications you intend to participate in.
The Career Service Office reserves the right to verify the accuracy of the information provided before approving the early recognition of credits.
You can start multiple curricular internships until you graduate. Once you have earned the required credits from your curriculum, any additional internships you complete will not result in earning extra credits.
After the “mandatory” curricular internship, you can then do an “optional” curricular internship without earning credits at any other institution or with any other employer.
No, the host institution or employer must request the activation of the internship online at least 5 working days before the start, following the instructions on the Curricular Internship Activation Request page. Students cannot submit the activation request.
