Curricular internships, aimed at students, are educational and orientation internships included in the curricula of universities and educational institutions based on regulatory standards. These are experiences provided as part of an education or training program, and their purpose is not directly to facilitate job placement, but rather to enhance the apprenticeship and training process through a so-called work-study approach.

Extracurricular internships are intended for unemployed graduates and can be initiated:

• within 12 months of graduation for some regions (e.g., the Lombardy Region);
• at any time, regardless of the date of graduation, in other regions (e.g., the Lazio Region), provided the intern falls into one of the following categories:
  • unemployed workers as defined in Article 19 of Italian Legislative Decree No. 150/2015;
  • workers receiving income support while still employed;
  • workers at risk of unemployment;
  • individuals who are already employed and seeking alternative employment;
  • people with disabilities and those facing disadvantages.

The minimum allowance is determined based on the regulations of each region.

Employers can initiate internships at no cost, and Luiss interns are covered by the sponsor (Luiss Guido Carli) for workplace accidents through INAIL, as well as for civil liability through companies operating in the sector.
