The Italian Tax Code Number (Codice Fiscale) is a unique identification number issued by the Agenzia delle Entrate (Italian Revenue Agency). It consists of 16 alphanumeric characters derived from personal details.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

  • The tax code automatically generated by the Web Self-Service when you apply to Luiss is an unofficial, internal-only code used for system registration purposes.

  • A Codice Fiscale is not required for everyone. However, incoming exchange students are required to obtain one in order to open a bank account, sign certain contracts (e.g., for a phone line), or register with the National Healthcare Service (SSN).

  • Landlords often require a Tax Code to register a rental contract, which must be legally recorded within 30 days of the lease start date. If needed, you can ask your landlord to wait until you arrive in Italy to obtain it.
Please note: according to guidelines from the Italian Revenue Agency, exchange students who are not registered as temporary residents in Italy are not required to obtain a tax code to sign a rental contract. You can clearly communicate this official position to your landlord by presenting the relevant official statement.

How can students from non-EU countries obtain an Italian Tax Code Number (Codice Fiscale)?

OPTION 1: Before You Arrive

Students can obtain their Italian Tax Code Number through the Italian embassy or consulate in their home country before traveling to Italy. Contact the embassy or consulate directly for details on the procedure.

OPTION 2: After Arrival

Students can obtain their Italian Tax Code Number through any Questura (Police headquarters) when their residence permit is issued. Please note that the residence permit is typically granted 5 to 8 months after the initial application. As a result, single-semester exchange students are unlikely to receive their Tax Code through this procedure during their stay.
