Language proficiency test - 1st semester, academic year 2026/2027
General guidelines
- The language proficiency test is mandatory.
- Those with no knowledge of the language do not need to take the test.
- You cannot take the test on dates or at times other than those assigned.
- It is advisable to take the test: failure to do so will inevitably delay placement in groups.
- If you are absent, you will be placed in the beginner group; the instructor will then consider moving you during the first lesson.
English Language Test – Undergraduate School
Economics and Management, Law, Political Science, Politics: Philosophy and Economics
For degree programs that require English as a compulsory course, groups will be formed based on the test, which takes place during the first class.
As the test date approaches, an email will be sent to your Luiss account (@studenti.luiss.it) with instructions on how to take the test.
Test dates
- Economics and Management: Tuesday, September 8, 8:30 AM (online)
- Law: Wednesday, September 9, 8:30 AM (online)
- Political Science and Politics: Philosophy and Economics: Monday, September 14, 8:30 AM (in person)
Exemption
Only students enrolled in the Economics and Management or Law programs may be exempted from the test if they hold one of the following certifications: IELTS, CAE, FCE, TOEFL, Aptis ESOL Advanced, or Duolingo English Test, obtained on or after September 1, 2024.
You can send your certification to certificazioni@trinityschool.it by Monday, August 31, 2026, including your first and last name, student ID number, and degree program. Without this information, the certification will not be evaluated.
The certification does not exempt you from attending the course.
Certifications are not accepted for Political Science and Politics: Philosophy and Economics.
English Language Test – Graduate School
For master's degree programs requiring English, groups will be formed after a language proficiency test.
As the test date approaches, an email will be sent to your Luiss account (@studenti.luiss.it) with instructions on how to take the test.
Exemption
Those who have already taken the English language exam or proficiency test at Luiss and who will be placed in groups based on the level recorded in their undergraduate program are exempt from the test.
Test dates
Administration, Finance, and Control (Italian program): Thursday, September 10, 11:30 AM (online)
You can be exempted from the test if you hold one of the following certifications: IELTS, CAE, FCE, TOEFL, Aptis ESOL Advanced, or Duolingo English Test, obtained on or after September 1, 2024.
You can send your certification to certificazioni@trinityschool.it by Monday, August 31, 2026, including your first and last name, student ID number, and degree program. Without this information, the certification will not be evaluated.
The certification does not exempt you from attending the course.
- International Relations: Monday, September 14, 2:00 PM (in-person). Certifications are not accepted for exemption.
Chinese, French, Spanish, and German tests
For course placement, there is a mandatory test during the first lesson for those starting courses this semester.
Starting Friday, September 4, you will receive an email inviting you to take the test at your Luiss email address (@studenti.luiss.it), along with instructions on how to complete the test.
Test dates
- Tuesday, September 8, 8:30 AM (online — except for Chinese, which is held in person)
For students enrolled in the second year (2026/2027) of Business Administration, Global Law, Management and Artificial Intelligence, and those returning from Utrecht in the third year of Economics and Business (mandatory language). - Saturday, September 12, 9:00 AM (in person)
For students enrolled in the third year (2026/2027) of Law who are starting the optional language course, and for those in the third year (2026/2027) of Economics and Business returning from Utrecht (optional language).
There is no language proficiency test for the Chinese and German courses (elective).
The test time is approximate, as students will be divided into groups.
Exemption
The following qualify for exemption from the test and the language course:
- international B2-level certifications earned on or after September 1, 2024
- high school diplomas from the country where the language is spoken
Certifications/diplomas can be sent to cla@luiss.it by the test date.
Those who demonstrate a full B2 level (B2.4 achieved) during the test will also be exempt from the course and can register their eligibility in the next available session.
Italian test for foreigners
To enroll in Italian courses, there is a mandatory language assessment test that will take place during the first lesson.
Test dates
- Thursday, September 10, 2:30 PM (online) for those who have chosen or will be able to choose Italian as a required language
- Saturday, September 12, at 9:00 AM (in-person) for those taking the course to earn credits for “Other Activities” or out of personal interest
The test time is approximate, as students will be divided into groups.
Students in three-year programs taught in English who hold foreign citizenship
They will need to take a mandatory language assessment test to verify a minimum proficiency in Italian at the A1.1 level. The test will take place online on Thursday, September 10, at 2:30 PM.
Complete beginners must take a course with a final test within the first year.
Exemption
You can be exempted from the test and the course if you have:
- an Italian language certificate that attests to at least level A1.1
- an Italian citizenship document
- an Italian high school diploma
