Criteria for awarding the degree grade

Resolution of the Academic Senate (January 24, 2017)

The Examining Committee, appointed by the School's Dean, is independent and autonomous. The Committee’s decision is final, and when assigning the degree score, it considers:

  • the topic and content of the thesis/final paper;
  • the Advisor's assessment and proposed score, from which the Committee may still deviate;
  • the student's academic record;
  • the impact on the weighted average, expressed in thirtieths, of the grades earned in a maximum of two elective courses, chosen exclusively from the approved course lists, regardless of any other grades obtained. Other types of elective courses, such as those taken during an Erasmus program or outside the approved course lists, do not contribute to the average in any way;
  • the starting score, expressed out of 110, which is rounded up or down. Therefore, if the decimal part begins with 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9, it is rounded up to the next whole number; otherwise, the decimal is truncated;
  • of the maximum score that can be awarded:

      - a maximum of 6 points for Bachelor's, Master's, and four-year degree programs;

      - a maximum of 7 points for a single-cycle master's degree program (the “Particolare Pregio” thesis is no longer required);

  • To receive honors, the initial grade must be at least 105.00/110, including bonus points but excluding any rounding up. Therefore, the exact initial grade will be considered. Starting with students enrolled in the 2025/2026 academic year, a grade of 110 with honors can only be achieved if the initial grade is at least 105.00/110, calculated without considering rounding or any bonus points. In any case, the advisor must propose the honors, and the Degree Committee must unanimously approve them.
  • Only in the event of a perfect score and the award of honors may the Committee, acting unanimously, grant a “special mention” (exclusively for Master's, four-year, and single-cycle Master's degree programs).

Additional bonuses to the starting score

Bonus for Graduating on Time

Based on the Academic Senate's decision, the following rules apply regarding additional bonuses to the degree score:

  • 1 BONUS POINT for those who graduate on time, meaning within a number of academic years not exceeding the normal duration of the degree program. For Bachelor’s and single-cycle Master’s programs, this corresponds to the year of first enrollment in the University System, while for Master’s programs, it corresponds to the year of first enrollment at Luiss. Please also note that no bonus will be awarded in the event of a double enrollment in the same year of the program or enrollment as a repeating student.
  • 0.5 BONUS POINT applies exclusively to Bachelor’s Degrees, starting from students enrolled in their 1st year for the 2025/2026 academic year (first available graduation session - summer a.y. 2027/2028 – June/July 2028), for those who complete an internship as part of the 4 ECTS credits under “Other Educational Activities.” It is also specified that:

    The bonus will be awarded only if the internship credits count toward the completion of the degree and are recognized as part of the “Other Educational Activities.”

    All internships completed without any recognition in the student's academic record or without ECTS credits are excluded. Please note that once the ECTS credits required for “Other Educational Activities” have been earned, no additional internships or other activities will be recognized.

    Only Bachelor’s Degree students enrolled in their 1st year for the 2025/2026 academic year who have already earned the ECTS credits required for “Other Educational Activities” through the completion of an activity other than an internship by June 30, 2026 — the eligibility date recorded in the Web Self Service booklet is valid — and who intend to complete an internship in order to earn ECTS credits that count toward the degree and are eligible for the aforementioned bonus point may request a change to their Study Plan no later than the date of submission of their degree exam request. The study plan will be modified only if the Career Service submits an internship that is eligible for the recognition of the ECTS credits required for “Other Educational Activities.”
