Try Again, Woody: Bullets Over Broadway

The world of 1920s gangsters, ruthless mobsters, nightclub dancers, and Broadway theater sets the stage for Try Me Again, Woody – or Bullets Over Broadway, the show that concludes the 12th year of the Luiss Guido Carli Theater course.
Why Woody Allen? First of all, it’s a nice anniversary: this year, Woody turns 80, and this is how we’d like to celebrate. And also because Woody Allen, besides being one of America's greatest filmmakers, is also a brilliant playwright. This is evident not only in the hilarious  Bullets Over Broadway, but also in excerpts from his other plays, which we had fun bringing together in this production. The show unfolds to the rhythm of jazz and features some of the most beautiful songs from the musical Chicago, sung live.
The story is set in 1920s New York. To stage his new play, a mediocre playwright named David Shayne must make an uncomfortable compromise: accept funding from the mob boss Nick Valenti, who in return demands that he cast his partner, the nightclub dancer Olive. The cast also features the great actress Helen Sinclair, Warner Purcell, and Eden Brent. The play seems destined to be a resounding flop, but David's luck is Cheech, Olive's bodyguard, who turns out to be a real writing talent. With a few tweaks to the script, he manages to give the play a brilliant twist, and it becomes a Broadway hit. However, David, realizing the result isn't his doing, abandons all artistic aspirations!
