Guidelines for sustainable printing of theses and documents

Since 2015, Luiss has been a strong and practical supporter of the United Nations 2030 Agenda Goals, and is committed to ensuring that all its initiatives comprehensively and transparently respect the principles of Sustainable Development. In fact, one of our university’s priorities is to reduce the environmental impact of the services we offer. Achieving this goal is closely tied to following specific guidelines for sustainable printing, which you can find below.

Paper selection:

  • Selection of products with EU EcoLabel certification.
  • Use of PCW (post-consumer waste) paper and/or paper with FSC (Forest Stewardship Certification) or PEFC certification.
  • 100% recycled paper made from post-consumer paper that meets the requirements of the EN 12281:2002 standard.
  • If there is no certification, still choose paper processed without chlorine and made using renewable energy.

Ink selection:

  • Use of inks with GreenGuard® Gold certification.
  • Use of environmentally friendly inks, including plant-based inks like soy or flax ink, instead of petroleum-based inks.

Choice of print format and fonts:

  •  Adhere to criteria when choosing text formatting that can significantly reduce paper and ink consumption without compromising the reading experience (One-sided printing - Format: 29x21 cm (A4) - Font: Century Gothic or Times New Roman - Size: 12 - Line spacing: 1.5 - Right margin: 1 - Left margin: 1.5 - Top and bottom margins: 1.25 - Paragraph spacing: no spacing, tab at the beginning of the paragraph).
  • Avoid Serif fonts.
  • Use ink-friendly fonts (such as Century Gothic, Garamond, Times New Roman, or Courier) or, even better, EcoFonts (which save 20% on ink when applied).
  • Print in grayscale instead of black to use less ink; avoid printing in color as much as possible.

Additionally:

  • The final product should be bound without adhesives, with pages stitched using non-synthetic thread (for example, organic cotton), and without the use of plastic or faux leather applications or inserts.
  • Participate in projects focused on the full recovery of printer cartridges (e.g., the ZeroZeroToner Project) or reforestation (e.g., PrintReleaf, Treedom, etc.) to offset the negative environmental impact of printing.
  • Printing from a supplier with Nordic Ecolabel, Der Blaue Engel, Umweltzeichen, or other ISO Type I environmental certifications (ISO 14024), or one that holds an ISO Type III Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) compliant with ISO 14025, or a self-declared ISO Type II “Regenerated” environmental claim compliant with ISO 14021.
  • Avoid printing draft versions of the document.
