Digital Craftsmanship and IoT
The program is open to all students enrolled in the 2019–2020 academic year in the first year of a Master’s degree program in the Departments of Economics and Finance or Political Science, or in the third year of the Single-Cycle Master’s degree program in Law.
The program is completely free, and attending it results in the recognition of University Credits as stipulated in the curriculum under “Other Activities.”
The program spans a total of 40 hours, divided into 10 modules of 4 hours each, and will take place in the second semester. To have your University Credits recognized, you must attend 80% of the total hours, which amounts to 32 hours. This means you can miss a maximum of 8 hours.
There are no English-language editions planned.
The course aims to introduce students to the new frontier of digital craftsmanship and its implications: the peer economy, horizontality, crowdfunding, sustainability, FabLabs and co-working, and self-entrepreneurship.
Specifically, students will create objects based on their own ideas, directly experiencing the potential of new tools and, most importantly, their accessibility—no need to be an engineer, as a basic education is sufficient!
Students will actively design and create smart objects using Internet of Things technology, with tech support from FabLab Roma Makers tutors. The tutors will provide Arduino microcontrollers and CNC machines, including 3D printers, laser cutters, plotters, and milling machines.
They will learn the basic techniques, but more importantly, they will gain methodologies and tools that they can apply to further exploration if they are interested in the world they have discovered.
The educational goal is, in fact, the independent creation of a social and shared learning path focused on the operational processes and problem-solving dynamics that the work teams will have to implement during the training experience.
After the initial theoretical introductory training at the Viale Romania location (Module I), participants will engage in hands-on work in collaboration with the FabLab Roma Network and Spazio Chirale. These partners will provide their technological expertise, as well as all the materials and machines available at their location (Via Ignazio Persico 32-34, Garbatella), where students will develop their ideas.
The course will cover the following topics:
Introduction to Factory 4.0. The Internet of Things and Innovation Trends. Makers and digital craftsmanship. (at the Luiss campus)
Starting with the second module, classes will take place at Spazio Chirale, located at Via Ignazio Persico 32-34.
FabLab technologies: a journey through 3D printers and CNC machines;
Self-production and personalized digital manufacturing;
Innovation topics related to the FabLab (home automation, agricultural/industrial innovation, fashion tech, architecture, interactive art and design, packaging, music, sports, and e-Health);
Tinkering and Rapid Prototyping;
Arduino, sensors, and actuators;
Additive manufacturing, modeling, and 3D printing;
2D drawing and laser cutting;
Vinyl cutting, wrapping, and other decoration techniques;
On the final day, each team will present their project (smart object) to a panel of experts from the FabLab Roma ecosystem.
General rules
- To earn University Credit, you must attend the specified minimum number of hours.
- A tutor will be responsible for recording attendance, which will be done by signing a register. Failure to sign in and/or out will be considered an absence. There will be no exceptions to the sole criterion for awarding CFU credits: attendance.
- Absence hours will be calculated based on the attendance records. Depending on the schedule or personal needs, students can take these hours all in one day or spread them out across multiple lessons.
- Once a student has chosen a course, they will not be able to earn University Credits through any other method.
- All students who have already earned the University Credits required by their curriculum for Other Activities, who have already started attending optional language courses, or who are enrolled in any other activity for which credits are recognized, are excluded from the program.
Additional information
- There are a maximum of 25 spots available, and participants will be selected solely based on the order in which they register. The maximum number of participants includes students from all relevant departments.
- The course will be activated provided a minimum of 15 participants are enrolled.
- All activities will take place during the second semester, either on Friday afternoons (from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM) or on Saturdays (from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM). Any 8-hour class days (from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM) will include a lunch break from approximately 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM, which is not counted toward the total hours.
- No activities will take place during the exam period.
