2018–2019 Edition
For the 2018-2019 academic year, LUISS Guido Carli offers all students who are formally enrolled in a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Single-Cycle degree program a range of educational opportunities. These are designed to help students gain greater self-awareness, both as individuals and in their relationships with others. These cross-cutting skills are increasingly useful and necessary, not only in the workplace but also in any social context.
The goal is to give students the chance to experiment, pushing beyond their limits and rediscovering themselves in relation to the context and social dynamics through the analysis and use of different, and sometimes unusual, forms of communication and play.
All courses will take place in the second semester of the 2018-2019 academic year, except for the Comics course, which will begin in the first semester and conclude in the second semester of the 2018-2019 academic year.
The courses offered for the 2018-2019 academic year are:
- Comics
- OpenYou – discovering the body to understand oneself and others
- Graphology
- Diction
- Italian Sign Language
- Exquisitely
- Game on
Course I – OpenYou – discovering the body to understand oneself and others
The course is structured into seven 2.5-hour sessions and will take place in the second semester.
The workshop aims to explore non-verbal communication and discover theatrical technique as a universal language of communication, providing a unique tool for learning and mastering new expressive techniques. The course aims to provide the tools to encourage interaction and communication between people, and to rekindle a collective and critical view of the contemporary world.
The approach focuses on teaching mutual attention, teamwork, and collaboration with others. For this to happen as naturally as possible, you need to become aware of your body as a tool to understand, use (voice, movement, presence), and leverage when studying stage listening, rhythm, and space. Through the mechanisms of theatrical play, both individual and collective relational and expressive tools are expanded.
The course guides you in rediscovering:
- Collaborative work and an awareness of one’s individuality within the group;
- A fresh approach to critical engagement that values the impact of each individual contribution;
- Exploring one’s identity through its virtuous and authorial characteristics;
- A deeper exploration of individual bodily expression in relation to others and the space;
- The power of negotiation and gaining awareness of one's own strategic and political inclinations.
The workshop is not geared toward performance and therefore will not result in any show. The focus is on self-development as part of a journey of personal artistic exploration, building relationships within the group based on trust, reciprocity, understanding, coordination, and active listening.
The course offers an opportunity for personal transformation, a chance to gain new awareness for practical, active, and creative teaching.
Course II – Graphology
The course consists of five 4-hour lessons and will take place in the second semester. It may include two additional lessons that delve deeper into forensic handwriting analysis for legal purposes.
Writing is not merely the result of a mechanical gesture, nor is it a simple tool for transcribing language; rather, it is a form of expression rich in meaning. The act of writing, as an expressive gesture, carries emotions, moods, sensations, and feelings—just like any other form of human expression. The writing process is a rather complex neurobiological activity.
Writing speaks directly to the observer, just like any other form of expression. However, it offers the advantage of allowing objective observation and direct analysis of fixed, unchanging elements, such as a written page.
By observing handwriting, graphology gathers clues to understand and depict the writer’s inner self and emotional states.
The course covers a wide range of applications, with a primary focus on personality analysis—helping us better understand who we are and what we want—as well as the role and opportunities that handwriting analysis offers in the legal field.
Course III – Diction
The course consists of six 4-hour lessons and will take place in the second semester.
A course taught by theater and voice-over instructors to refine our students' expressive abilities.
Knowing how to communicate effectively and elegantly is an increasingly important and crucial skill for establishing credibility and authority in both professional and non-professional settings.
Like any skill, it needs to be developed and practiced.
Therefore, this module aims to improve communication skills through spoken language, focusing on vocal production and correct pronunciation. The goal is to refine intonations that are specific to one’s region of origin and correct errors by teaching students how to manage their inflections.
Course IV – Italian Sign Language
The course consists of 10 lessons, each lasting 3 hours, and will take place at the Istituto Statale per Sordi during the second semester.
The course aims to encourage students to embrace inclusive thinking that welcomes diversity and others, aligning with activities focused on Ethics, Responsibility, and Sustainability. The experience of not being able to use one of the five senses amplifies the perceptions derived from the others, opens up new channels of communication, and thus allows you to discover a new sensitivity and a different dimension of interaction. Furthermore, learning a completely new language and embracing a grammar that differs from one's own trains the mind to explore new conceptual structures.
The course can be developed in collaboration with the Istituto Statale per Sordi at their premises, which are not far from our campus, with a continued focus on cross-pollination and engagement with diversity.
