Examinations

According to current regulations, exams are held exclusively in person at the University's campuses.

Students have three exam sessions per academic year: Winter, Summer, and Fall. You can view the educational model for the Undergraduate and Graduate Schools on the page.

Exams can only be taken after the courses have been completed. Therefore, the first available session for exams related to courses offered in the first semester will be the winter session, while for courses offered in the second semester, it will be the summer session.

For each degree program, the assessment of student progress during exams considers the results achieved at various points throughout the semester. These results are verified according to the methods specified by the faculty member during the course (e.g., oral exams, tests, midterm exams, individual assignments, group projects, presentation and discussion of papers and case studies, active participation in class, etc.).

Registration is mandatory and essential for taking exams. You can register via the Web Self Service under the section 'Exams - Available Sessions.'

 In this regard, please note that:

  • In each session, students who are in good standing and have properly registered can take all exams, provided they adhere to their approved study plan, meet any prerequisites, and fulfill the required attendance checks.
  • students must register for exams—or cancel their registration—within five days of the exam date;
  • students cannot register for multiple exam sessions for the same course at the same time;
  • Once the day for booking the exam session has passed, and since it’s not possible to cancel a booking made within the five days prior, you must wait until the exam session date has elapsed before you can book the next session for the same course.
  • For written and oral exams, students must register for both the written and the oral exam (even if they occur on the same day).

You can check the exam dates in the designated section of your personal Web Self Service page (Exams - Available sessions).

Please note that these dates may change, so we recommend always checking the information posted on the Web Self Service as the exam session approaches and taking it into account when planning your schedule.

The published exam session dates are only those that have been received. If the exam session date you are looking for is not on the list, please contact didactics@luiss.it. Any issues regarding exam registration should be reported to segreteria@luiss.it within the exam session registration period.

The types of exams currently offered at Luiss are:

  • Graded written exam
  • Graded oral exam
  • Written exam followed by a graded oral exam

During written exams, students must display their ID on their desk for the entire duration of the exam. The use of cell phones is prohibited.

You may withdraw from the written exam by submitting your paper before the end of the exam, ensuring the faculty member records your withdrawal.

The student will receive an email to their Luiss account when the result is published and can view it on their Self Service - Results Dashboard web page.

For graded written exams, students can view their written assignments within three days of the results being published, following the faculty member's instructions. Three days after the results are published, the exam outcome will be recorded and permanently added to the student's academic record.

For oral exams, the recording process will be handled directly during the exam with the faculty member.

For written exams followed by an oral exam, the grading process will be completed directly during the exam with the faculty member.

Students are responsible for checking their academic record and the uploading of course exams on the Self Service web page.

Please note that:

The minimum passing grade is eighteen out of thirty, and the maximum grade is thirty out of thirty with the possibility of honors. A failing grade is not assigned.

Students are encouraged to review the provisions of the Luiss Student Code of Conduct.

An exam is considered passed only after it has been recorded and registered in the student's academic record.

An exam that has been passed, graded, and recorded in the student's academic record with a favorable outcome cannot be retaken under any circumstances.

Prerequisites

An exam is considered a prerequisite when it provides the knowledge and skills needed to take a subsequent exam.

If a student passes two exams in the same session, with one serving as a prerequisite for the other, and these results are recorded and registered as successful in the student's academic record, both exams will be considered valid regardless of the order in which they were taken. This does not apply to the single-cycle master's degree program in Law, where the prerequisite requirement will also be enforced within the same exam session.

Conversely, if the student fails to pass the prerequisite exam, and this is recorded and registered in their academic record, the first exam taken will be canceled by Rector’s Decree (as the required prerequisite has not been met).
