Thesis assignment and graduation exam

Thesis assignment and graduation exam

Four-year degree programs

The final examination for master's degree programs, including single-cycle master's degree programs, involves the discussion and evaluation of a written dissertation (thesis), in Italian and/or a foreign language. The thesis must be related to a course in which the graduating student has taken an exam or obtained recognition/validation, excluding seminars, language courses, courses that require a pass/fail assessment, all courses where the grade does not count toward the grade point average, and elective courses.

The thesis must demonstrate the critical, linguistic, and scientific maturity expected of the cultural and professional figures associated with each master's degree, and it must be written in an original manner under the guidance of both the Advisor and the Co-Advisor.

There are three graduation sessions in an academic year: Summer (generally June/July), Fall (generally October/November), and the Extraordinary session (generally March/April).

Below, you will find the administrative deadlines for the graduation sessions. The University reserves the right to modify the indicated deadlines due to educational and logistical needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

You can choose a topic from the various courses for which you have taken exams or obtained recognition/validation, excluding seminars, language courses, courses that require a pass/fail assessment, all courses with a grade that doesn't count toward the GPA, and elective courses. The topic is agreed upon with faculty members who are (or have been) the course instructors for the chosen course, or who are otherwise experts in the subject, and who, at the time of the request, are tenured or contract faculty at the University. The Advisor will be responsible for the work performed. The Dean of the Graduate School or their delegate appoints the Co-Advisor based on the chosen discipline and topic. It is not possible to express preferences.

  1. Fill out the thesis assignment form three months before the session you plan to use
  2. Fill out the graduation application
  3. Upload the thesis
  4. Complete course exams
  1. After reaching an agreement with your advisor, log in to the Web Self Service, click on the menu in the top right corner, then select “Esame di Laurea” (Graduation Exam). Fill in the thesis title assignment within the timeframe indicated in the calendar with the administrative deadlines.
  2. The advisor, via their Web Self Service and after the completion deadline, must approve or reject the thesis assignment.
  3. You can check the status of your thesis assignment in the Web Self Service under the section “Esame di Laurea” (Degree Examination). Upon approval by the Advisor, the start of thesis writing is formalized, and the thesis assignment status changes from “Completed online” to “Assigned.” If not approved, the student receives a notification to their University email account.
  4. Once the Dean of the Graduate School or their delegate assigns a co-advisor, the name will appear in the Web Self Service, and the thesis assignment status will change to “Approved.”

Important: The co-advisor is responsible for the work performed and will attend the graduation ceremony alongside the advisor. Given the educational and academic importance of the Co-Advisor, we encourage you to reach out from the very start of your thesis writing process to share any updates on its progress.

The thesis assignment indicates the earliest possible session for graduation. Therefore, you don’t need to fill it out again if your graduation is postponed to a later session, unless you plan to change the thesis subject or advisor. On the other hand, you register for a specific graduation session by filling out the graduation application and paying the graduation fee.

If you have only submitted the thesis assignment and not the graduation application, you do not need to submit a waiver for the graduation session.

  1. Log in to Web Self Service, click on the menu in the top right corner, and then select “Graduation Exam” to fill out the graduation application. You can only do this during the periods indicated in the calendar, which also shows the administrative deadlines.
  2. After completing the graduation application, go to the Payments section to pay the €200.00 graduation fee.
  3. Check with the Career Service regarding the status of your internship if it hasn't already been recognized in your record book.

Students who enrolled before the 2015/2016 academic year must return their badge and paper registration booklet by mail to Luiss Guido Carli - Student Administration Office - Viale Romania, 32 - 00197 Rome.

Once entered and confirmed, the data cannot be changed, except for the thesis title, which can be slightly modified when uploading the file.

The graduation application will be considered valid only after the payment of the graduation fee is visible online.

Failure to pay the graduation fee or to return the badge and booklet (the latter point applies only to students enrolled before the 2015/2016 academic year) will result in exclusion from the graduation session.

Log in to Web Self Service, click on the menu in the top right corner, and then select “Esame di Laurea” (Graduation Exam). You can only do this during the periods indicated in the calendar with the administrative deadlines.

Carefully read the guidelines regarding the style for the final paper and the authorization for thesis consultation. Select one of the three options provided and proceed (for more information: LuissThesis).

Also, review the University’s rules on plagiarism.

Before uploading, make sure the file is readable and compatible with the Windows operating system.

Upload the final paper as a single PDF file, with a maximum size of 15 MB. There is no requirement to submit any paper documentation. The upload can only be done once during the process’s open period and will be considered the sole, final file.

After the upload deadline, the Advisor and the Co-Advisor will approve or reject the file you uploaded through their Web Self Service.

The digital copy of the thesis will be stored in this University’s computerized archive, in compliance with the security measures outlined in the Personal Data Protection Code. It will be accessible for administrative and scientific purposes, where permitted, solely by authorized individuals, under the same rules that apply to consultation. Random checks will be conducted on the uploaded file.

Failure to upload the thesis within the specified periods, or lack of approval from the Advisor and Co-Advisor, will result in exclusion from the graduation session.

For details regarding margins, line spacing, and the font to be used, please refer to the instructions provided by the advisor and the Stylistic Guidelines for the Final Paper/Guidelines for Sustainable Printing of Theses and Documents.

You can choose to withdraw from the graduation session by clicking on “Withdraw from the session” under the Graduation Exam section of the Web Self Service. The €200.00 graduation fee you've already paid will also be valid for subsequent graduation sessions. When you fill out the graduation application again for the next session, following the deadlines posted on the University’s website, you’ll only need to pay the €16.00 revenue stamp virtually.

You can view the date for your thesis defense by logging into Web Self Service and selecting “Esame di Laurea,” or by checking the session calendar, which is published exclusively on the University's notice board. As the graduation session draws closer, we will email you the invitation.

There is no way to express preferences regarding the evaluation date of the final paper.

A PC will be available at the graduation session for any presentations, so you don't need to bring your own.

These regulations are intended to establish general guidelines to ensure a smooth and stress-free conclusion to your university career. Therefore, we kindly ask graduating students, as well as their relatives and friends, to follow the instructions below to allow the graduation session to proceed in an orderly manner:

  • All candidates must wait their turn in the classroom next to the Sala Colonne, along with their relatives and friends, to avoid disrupting the normal flow of the graduation sessions.
  • Once the discussion is over, celebrations must be conducted with respect for the venue and within the bounds of good manners and civil behavior, so as not to disrupt the continuation of the session.
  • Please note that throwing confetti or any other material on University premises is strictly prohibited.
