Luiss Open: The values of the Union and the repositioning of its founding principles
In 2020, Bordeaux will publish a book based on research funded by the San Pio V Institute of Political Studies, in which I participated from 2018 to 2019. The title of the volume is Uniti si può. The European Union’s values in times of crisis. In addition to co-editing, I contributed an article titled “The European Union’s Migration Policy: Between Realpolitik and Founding Values.” We are planning to present the volume at various universities and institutions, including Luiss.
Research description
According to Article 2 of the Treaty on European Union (TEU), the Union is founded on the values of respect for human dignity, the rule of law, and respect for human rights, including the rights of persons belonging to minorities. These values are shared by all member states in a society characterized by pluralism, non-discrimination, tolerance, justice, solidarity, and equality between women and men.
These principles have consistently guided the long process of European integration, from the signing of the Treaties of Rome in 1957 to the present day. Over these 60 years, the European Union has consistently expanded the values on which it is founded, and as a result, these values have steadily and significantly strengthened over time.
