At Luiss, basic research forms the foundation of scientific activity. It expands disciplinary knowledge, supports theoretical advancement, and strengthens the University’s educational mission.
Spanning economics, law, political science, sociology, management, history, and the latest frontiers of artificial intelligence, basic research is carried out within seven Departments. It aims to foster interdisciplinary dialogue while training the next generation of scholars equipped to understand and address the transformations of contemporary society. Each Department is associated with a PhD program, the third cycle of university education, aimed at providing the highest level of academic training, both in the disciplinary and research areas that characterize the Department itself, and in the research skills that a doctoral candidate must possess at the time of obtaining the PhD degree.
Research in the Departments
Luiss is organized into seven academic Departments, each focused on a specific field and engaged in research that ranges from AI and data science to finance, law, management, and the analysis of political and social change.
Each Department is led by a Head who coordinates scientific activities and ensures the Quality Assurance system, supported by a Research and Third Mission Delegate. Together with other faculty members, these individuals form the Review Group, responsible for monitoring and continuous improvement. Annual planning and evaluation take place through the SUA-R/TM — the University’s official Research and Third Mission Report.
Basic research is also nourished by the contribution of PhD candidates enrolled in the Doctoral Program pertaining to the Department. Although it is a training path, and therefore a teaching activity, Luiss has chosen to place the design of doctoral training within the relevant Department, while the management remains under the responsibility of the Teaching Division. This is because doctoral training combines the transfer of the most advanced knowledge in the Department’s disciplinary areas with the acquisition of technical research skills in accordance with the highest international standards.
PhD Programs
Luiss PhD programs train international scholars, supported by scholarships, tutoring, and mobility, with curricula accredited according to national and European quality standards.
Research Contracts
Luiss offers numerous open positions for post-doctoral researchers on fixed-term contracts, aimed at supporting and developing the University’s research activities.
