Production of public goods in the social, educational, and cultural sectors

Thanks to its close ties with the companies in its network, Luiss is able to make a significant impact on the local area and society. It does this by enhancing its historical and artistic heritage, organizing training activities for non-traditional users in collaboration with schools, and promoting numerous Public Engagement initiatives with a strong educational, cultural, and societal development focus. These range from one-off events to ongoing projects and the development of innovative communication channels.

Production and management of cultural heritage and activities

For over two decades, Luiss has been dedicated to creating and showcasing its artistic and cultural heritage.

Over time, the establishment of the Theater Laboratory and the Polyphonic Choir (which since 2022 has been enriched by a collaboration with the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma), the efforts to enhance historic sites (such as the renovation of Villa Blanc completed in 2017 and the project for guided tours open to the public launched that same year), and the management of the PalaLuiss acquired in 2000 have further articulated and enriched Luiss’s impact on the region. These initiatives stand as tangible signs of the social role the university plays in its community.

Luiss also hosts the permanent exhibitions “Laboratorio teatrale Luiss in mostra” and “RetroMachines,” and has acquired numerous contemporary artworks (photographs, paintings, sculptures, and installations) by Italian and international artists, which are now displayed across its various locations.

Continuing education and open learning

Luiss offers continuing education courses through its postgraduate schools: the Luiss School of Law, the Luiss School of Government, and the Luiss Business School. Since 2016, it has been collaborating with the schools to design Pathways for Transversal Skills and Orientation (formerly School-to-Work Programs), which take place at the Education Center of the Milano Luiss Hub for Makers and Students.

In 2020, 42 Roma Luiss was established as the first Italian location of École 42. This renowned, revolutionary coding school is free, open, and has campuses in over 22 countries worldwide. Admission is based solely on competence and merit. In 2022, it also opened its second Italian location: 42 Firenze Luiss.

Public Engagement

Luiss is particularly active in public engagement, with over 200 events open to the public organized or hosted at the university each year under the coordination of the Digital Marketing & Events department. These include concerts by the Polyphonic Choir, performances by the Theater Laboratory, and events organized by the Sports Association.

In addition to these, there are numerous external projects aimed at schools and regional development. Among the longest-running and most impactful are LabGov.City and Legalità e Merito, both rated as “Excellent” in the 2015–2019 Research Quality Assessment (VQR).

In addition to event organization, there is the extensive publishing work of Luiss University Press, the communication and Press Office activities, the informative and entertaining programming on RadioLuiss, the free, globally accessible Luiss Social TV platform, the research dissemination initiatives coordinated by the Research Office, and the publications overseen by the Luiss Research Centers.
