Instructional goals

The lab aims at introducing to reading and structuring scientific contributions. This will be done by familiarising students with the goals, objectives, logics, research design, and structure of a scientific contribution.

Prerequisites

No specific prerequisites.

Intended learning outcomes

1. Ability to analytically and critically read a scientific contribution, through a vision of both the entirety of a paper and its specific parts; 2. Learning which are the necessary steps to set up a research design and subsequently build a scientifically contribution based on it, whilst also understanding the specificities of each step.

Course Contents

Introduction to research; objectives and logics of a scientific contribution; research design; organising a paper; literature review and hypotheses formulation; design: data and methods; analysis; critical discussion and contribution to the literature.

Teaching Methods

Class lectures; interactive exercises and course activities

Assessment Method

Class attendance and active participation; continuous assessment through exercises and activities (two sets of topics, 15% on the first day and 35% on the second day). Non-attending students: written exam.

Components of a scientific contribution (in detail), to understand in order to be able to critically read or produce a scientific contribution: - Research question, literature review and hypotheses formulation - Research design: data and methods - Analysis - Critical discussion and contribution to the literature.
