Food, Drink, and Cultural Heritage
The importance of traditional food and beverages
Italy and many other European countries have a wealth of foods and drinks that are 'traditional' and form part of their cultural heritage, linked to places, production methods, and ways of life. They are important for national and local identity and are also linked to other forms of cultural heritage, such as historic sites, art, and museums. At the same time, they are also immensely important economically, providing revenue and employment for local businesses, farmers, and employees.
Traditional food and drink are especially vital for Italy. Each town, area, and region has its own specialty dishes and drinks. They attract large numbers of tourists, often high-value ones. They are crucial exports. Appreciation of traditional Italian food and drink has greatly increased in recent decades, as seen in examples as diverse as the Slow Food movement, television and media programs, and protected labels such as the EU’s “Geographical Indication.”
Promoting and protecting traditional food and beverages
The Roundtable examines how traditional foods and beverages can be promoted, protected, and linked to other forms of cultural heritage. They deserve assistance both because of their role in identity and because of their economic value.
At the same time, they need support, especially since their production costs may be higher than those of other industrial food and drink. Effective support requires cooperation and coordination among different organizations. The government plays a vital role in both providing finance and regulating.
However, support can also come from public cultural heritage organizations, such as regional or local government departments or museums. Since many producers are privately owned, the private sector is also crucial. Finally, producer and consumer associations, as well as local bodies, have taken initiatives to develop and promote specific food and drink, often at the local and regional levels.
