The Observatory on Sentences, Rights, Social Reintegration of Convicted Persons, and Juvenile Justice aims to examine the current mechanisms guiding the function of criminal sanctions and their execution. The goal is to identify tools that are concretely effective in pursuing the re-educational purpose enshrined in the Constitution and, consequently, reducing the recidivism rate.

The first line of inquiry involves developing studies and proposals to support the implementation and innovation of legislation regarding access to training and employment for inmates and convicts. These are seen as key drivers for their social reintegration, including by promoting benefits and incentives for organizations and businesses that employ inmates and former inmates.

Furthermore, research activities focus on analyzing and monitoring the Italian juvenile justice system, with the aim of helping to identify additional prevention tools and reference models from a de lege ferenda perspective.

The Observatory also plans to delve deeper into the issue of women in prison, examining both the current inadequacies of the prison system and the analysis of female criminal behavior, with a focus on prevention and the rehabilitation of men regarding violence against women.

At the same time, the Observatory aims to promote studies and research that will help develop effective public-private cooperation, enabling the successful social reintegration of inmates. To this end, the Observatory collaborates closely with the Department of Prison Administration and the Department of Juvenile Justice and Community, which not only provide data, statistics, and information, but also help delve deeper into the issues and define research objectives.
