Instructional goals

This course provides practical knowledge on the preparation of project proposals for the Horizon Europe funding framework. The outcome of the course is a project proposal

Intended learning outcomes

By the end of the course the student will: a) know how the Horizon Europe programme works b) know how the core elements of a Research and Innovation project and know how to write any project proposal c) know the process leading from an idea to a project, including budgeting and team-building

Course Contents

This course is a writing laboratory. The students will learn step-by-step how to prepare a Research and Innovation Project Proposal. The course is divided roughly in 40% theory and 60% coursework and assignments. The work is carried out in groups

No textbook, no mandatory reading assignments

Teaching Methods

The course will be partially frontal lectures discussing methodologies and theoretical aspects, and partially a practical workshop in which the students are expected to complete classwork and discuss their own project development.

Assessment Method

The students will be evaluated on a pass/fail criteria based on: - level of engagement in the lecture - quality of the coursework - quality of the final presentation

Thesis assignment criteria

By choice based on personal interest. Assigned by the lecturer if no workable preference is available

Week 1

Course orientation, learning objectives; the European R&I context and the innovation pathway

Week 2

Analysis of the Horizon Europe hierarchy (destinations, missions, calls, topics). Assignment of topics and workgroups

Week 3

Project Canvas, setting SMART objectives and preparation of a concept note. Role of Ethics and Digitalisation in Horizon projects

Week 4

Consortium building and stakeholder mapping

Week 5

State of the Art Analysis, literature search, patent search and data visualisation in Excel

Week 6

Describing and methodology and graphical synthesis. Challenges, barriers and risks. Multidisciplinary and gender dimension

Week 7

Checkpoint and consollidation

Week 8

Results, outcomes and impacts. Preparation of impact models

Week 9

Communication, dissemination and exploitation. Role of Open Science and Data Management. Impact on EU policies and IP management

Week 10

Workplan and work packages, preparation of GANTT and PERT charts

Week 11

Budgeting and classwork on presentations

Week 12

Final presentations and feedback
