Stakeholder Theory and Organizational Purpose: Past, Present, and Future

Keynote Lecture by Prof. Edward Freeman, Professor of Business Administration, University of Virginia's Darden School of Business

In this keynote speech, Professor Edward Freeman will share his thoughts on how stakeholder theory has defined organizational purpose and how that purpose has evolved since his seminal book was published in 1984—four decades ago. He will illustrate the promise of stakeholder capitalism and venture philanthropy in addressing health threats, and will provide an example of a successful multi-stakeholder collaboration that helped defeat dangerous diseases in Indonesia.

R. Edward Freeman is the Stephen E. Bachand University Professor of Business Administration and the Olsson Professor of Business Administration, as well as the academic director of the Institute for Business in Society at the University of Virginia Darden School of Business. Freeman is perhaps best known for his award-winning book, Strategic Management: A Stakeholder Approach (Cambridge, 2010), originally published in 1984. In it, he traced the origins of the stakeholder concept back to several others and suggested that businesses build their strategy around their relationships with key stakeholders. Freeman holds a Ph.D. in philosophy from Washington University and a B.A. in mathematics and philosophy from Duke University. He was recently awarded seven honorary doctorates (DHC) from various international universities.
