Arianna Iacona: Commitment to Solidarity Shopping

Luiss student shares her experience with the Community of Sant'Egidio

Arianna Iacona, a student, completed a Bachelor's Degree in Economics and Management and is currently enrolled in the first year of a Master's Degree in Corporate Finance. She chose Luiss for “the excellent quality of teaching and the attention given to students.”

Arianna has known the Community of Sant'Egidio for a long time, which is why she decided to join its Luiss chapter. She helps prepare and distribute meals to the homeless: “I also oversaw the meal preparation process. I contacted suppliers, looked for volunteers to pick up donated food, and went to collect it myself. We prepared about 50 meals each week.

At this particular time, the student is coordinating Spesa Solidale, a service that collects donated food to distribute to those who cannot leave their homes due to physical or financial reasons. “From the very start, we tried to be creative and find alternative ways to reach our homeless friends. I enjoy being part of this project because I can see firsthand how much people want to give, to be useful, and to help those who have less than they do. “I've spoken with hundreds of people over the past few days, between online classes,” she says.

One of the core values that emerges from the experience of volunteering is the ability to persevere in the face of challenges. “Volunteering isn't easy: you have to be consistent, determined, and, above all, passionate. Just like at university,” Arianna explains. The student also says that this activity has helped her overcome shyness and discover hidden abilities: “It's not just a useful way to spend free time, but an opportunity to grow and change your perspective, seeing the world through different eyes.”

Arianna has many fond memories of her time at university, from lunches in the garden to the sound of Radio Luiss to afternoons in the study lounge. But if she had to pick just one, it would be Graduation Day: “We were all together, looking our best, happy, and feeling a sense of accomplishment.”

In the future, the Luiss student would like to work in film production and distribution, although she doesn't rule out other paths, such as ethical finance: “In the meantime, I will definitely continue my work with Sant'Egidio, always at the forefront.”
