Once again this year, Italy takes the lead in the “Energy and Climate Change” category

“GreenMetric” ranking: Luiss again tops the list in Italy this year in the “Energy and Climate Change” category

Luiss ranks among the greenest and most sustainable universities in the world. This is confirmed by the prestigious UI GreenMetric World University Ranking, which recognizes universities’ global commitment to environmental change, energy conservation, and the sustainability of infrastructure and transportation.

The six criteria considered—Setting and Infrastructure, Energy and Climate Change, Waste, Water, Transportation, and Education & Research—have placed the Libera Università Internazionale degli Studi Sociali among the top 20 greenest universities in the world out of the 1,050 reviewed. The university has climbed over 200 positions since 2018, and this year it ranks 19th. The university named after Guido Carli also remains the top-ranked in Italy in the “Energy and Climate Change” category

This significant new achievement recognizes Luiss's strong commitment to sustainability. Every day, alongside our students, we learn to cultivate a deep awareness of urgent issues that can no longer be postponed, including a focus on energy consumption and our relationship with the environment. Thanks to the significant investment we've made in recent years to instill a green mindset and lifestyle in our students, tomorrow's young talents will carry these good practices into the workforce, positively transforming the organizations where they work,” said Luiss's Director General, Giovanni Lo Storto

Indeed, Luiss works to integrate sustainability into its ecosystem, encouraging members of its community to actively contribute across three dimensions: environmental, social, and economic. The university has, in fact, adopted a set of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to monitor the impact of projects and initiatives aimed at sustainable and inclusive development. Together with the Acea Group, it launched the “Luiss Green Mobility” project, Europe’s first smart mobility service for universities. In partnership with Intesa Sanpaolo, this service has enabled the entire university community to travel between its various campuses throughout the capital since 2016, using a fleet of 12 electric cars and 5 shuttles (2 electric and 3 natural gas).

For several years now, the University has also been pursuing a plan to improve efficiency and source 100% of its energy from renewable sources, installing energy-efficient lighting across all its campuses and infrastructure.

One example is The Dome, the newest building on the Viale Romania Campus, which has earned LEED Platinum certification—one of the most prestigious international accolades for a building’s environmental quality and energy management. And on the topic of energy, Luiss recently hosted the 13th edition of the Non-Sprecare Award, which gathered, promoted, and recognized the best anti-waste practices from young people and organizations across Italy.

Finally, since 2014, the Luiss Community Garden has been active on the Viale Romania Campus, a space open to students and the entire neighborhood community.
