Recent Luiss graduate shares his experience with the School of Peace

Luiss graduate Guglielmo Tozzi completed a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science, followed by a Master's Degree in Government, Administration, and Politics. Guglielmo highlights the university's strengths, particularly its wide range of opportunities both within and outside the curriculum: “All these activities are crucial for both personal and professional development, and they let you fully experience the university environment.”

In fact, the recent graduate is actively involved in volunteer work with the Luiss branch of the Community of Sant'Egidio, particularly focusing on the "School of Peace" project. "It's a time for sharing with families from Rome's suburbs, where we engage in a variety of activities with the children." Guglielmo and the Luiss students help the young pupils with their homework and talk to them about issues related to their daily lives, such as diversity, ecology, and racism.

“During this unique time of quarantine and crisis, we've been looking for alternative ways to stay close to the children. We call them or video call them to keep the connection and relationship alive, as well as to help them with their studies and address their specific needs.” To foster a sense of community among the children and raise their awareness of the circumstances faced by people outside their families, Luiss students asked them to create drawings. These drawings were then used to produce a video for the elderly at a care facility.

“Luiss makes us feel fortunate and provides all the tools we need to give back some of our good fortune to these people.” Guglielmo recommends that all university students engage in volunteer work because “it's incredibly enriching and helps you stay grounded and keep your feet firmly on the ground. Getting to know firsthand the real problems people around us face changes you profoundly."

For Guglielmo, his fondest memory of university is his graduation: a moment of great satisfaction that marks the culmination of both his personal and academic journey. In the future, he wants to keep learning and, alongside his career, continue volunteering with the Community of Sant'Egidio.

“Anyone can volunteer, and we like to share that because we want to inspire responsible behavior. We would be thrilled if we could get new students involved, not only because volunteering can go hand in hand with a successful academic career, but because there's a real need for it,” he concludes.
