Rome, July 24, 2023. Today, at the Luiss Campus on Viale Pola, the State Police, Luiss Guido Carli University, Assosharing, and ACI – Automobile Club d’Italia signed a Memorandum of Understanding to develop awareness initiatives aimed at promoting a culture of safe driving.

The ceremony was attended by the Chief of Police and Director General of Public Security, Vittorio Pisani; the Director General of Luiss Guido Carli University, Giovanni Lo Storto; the President of ACI, Angelo Sticchi Damiani; and the President of Assosharing, Matteo Tanzilli.

The Memorandum outlines the organization of awareness-raising initiatives aimed at the entire Luiss community: students, faculty, staff, and collaborators.

Training and informational courses on road safety topics will then be developed for students.

The initial activities outlined in the protocol will take place during Freshers' Week, scheduled for September 4–8, 2023. Students from the university and high schools attending the final week of the Luiss Summer School will engage in hands-on activities and interactive lessons focused on road safety.

Starting next academic year, the Traffic Police will offer training sessions led by qualified personnel, focused on preventing road accidents. This will include the use of the State Police’s “Pullman Azzurro,” a traveling multimedia classroom equipped with simulators, visors, and special equipment that recreate the effects of driving under the influence. The goal is to raise awareness among drivers about the risks associated with unsafe driving behaviors.

ACI's activities, on the other hand, will focus on building, promoting, and spreading a culture of responsible and sustainable mobility. Meanwhile, Assosharing member companies will participate in test drives and both theoretical and practical demonstrations to foster a safe driving approach, including when behind the wheel of shared vehicles.

“All too often, young lives are cut short on the roads due to reckless and irresponsible driving. Therefore, as the new academic year begins, we decided to create a memorandum of understanding that involves all stakeholders in the road safety system, with the aim of raising awareness among the entire Luiss community. There’s a growing need for awareness and focus on what to do—and what to avoid—when driving,” said Giovanni Lo Storto, the University’s Director General.

The Chief of Police and Director General of Public Security, Vittorio Pisani, noted: “It's always a pleasure and an honor for the Traffic Police to be called upon to raise awareness among our citizens about road safety. Therefore, Luiss deserves great praise for the care it has shown in taking on this commitment for its university community. Many tragedies and a great deal of pain could be avoided if each of us simply followed the rules. Special thanks go to Assosharing and ACI for their ongoing commitment to working together to create legal pathways that protect human life.”

“Road safety education and promoting awareness of the importance of following the rules are the cornerstones of Assosharing's work, along with that of its member companies. These are issues that are very important to this government, and especially to the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport. The Ministry has asked the sector to make a specific commitment on this matter, which the Association has accepted by signing this Memorandum of Understanding, the first of its kind at the national level. The initiative launched with Luiss, the State Police, and ACI represents, in fact, the paradigm for a fruitful convergence between different but complementary entities, such as operators and institutions, and is aimed precisely at young people who use micromobility as a quick way to get around,” said Assosharing President Matteo Tanzilli.

“Road safety education is crucial. And it's crucial to start with the younger generations. In fact, accidents are the leading cause of death among people aged 15 to 29. It's a tragedy we can do a great deal about, as evidenced by the 60% reduction in road fatalities from 2001 to 2021. Therefore, a project like this can truly make a difference: it can help us save thousands of lives and create a generation of road users who are increasingly aware, responsible, and safe,” said ACI President Angelo Sticchi Damiani.
