Luiss joins the global ranking of the Top 50 most sustainable universities

Luiss enters the global ranking of the Top 50 most sustainable universities and confirms its first place, second in the world, among Italian universities for “Energy and climate change”

The university is climbing the world’s most important green and sustainable ranking, the World University GreenMetric, which assesses universities’ commitment to respecting the environment, conserving energy, and addressing climate change. Luiss Guido Carli remains second globally and first among Italian universities in the “Energy and Climate Change” category, and it has joined the Top 50 most sustainable universities.

In the 2020 edition, 922 universities from around the world took part, and Luiss ranked among the best—along with the University of Bologna, the University of Turin, the Polytechnic University of Turin, and the University of L'Aquila—reaching 43rd place globally (up from 107th in 2019) and 5th place among Italian universities (up from 7th in 2019), making a leap of over 1,000 points compared to last year.

We are making progress in sustainability thanks to the significant commitment and substantial investment we have made in recent years. Going green and reducing our environmental impact are among the fundamental pillars of Luiss’s strategic development,” says General Director Giovanni Lo Storto. He continues, “ This vision takes shape through the work of every part of the university, which, in close collaboration with the Rector’s team of delegates, aims to monitor, enhance, and stimulate the university’s actions in an area that is so important for the entire Luiss community.”

Through ongoing collaboration with the RUS – the Network of Universities for Sustainable Development – Luiss has established a set of KPIs to monitor the impact of projects and initiatives aimed at sustainable and inclusive development. These include the use of electricity from renewable sources, the installation of energy-efficient lighting, and the Luiss Green Mobility service, which offers a fleet of 12 electric cars and 5 shuttles (2 electric and 3 natural gas) available to the entire student and academic community, transforming how people get around the city.

Luiss also works with and for the local community, alongside its stakeholders, to remain a driving force behind new initiatives and a place where solutions to real social needs are sought and tested. Among the educational initiatives for students in Bachelor's and Master's programs, LabGov – the Laboratory for the Governance of the Commons – has been active for years, challenging students with real-world sustainability issues. Each year, LabGovers embark on a civic regeneration project for urban common goods, aiming to incubate and accelerate civic enterprises and community cooperatives. They develop public policies focused on creating new jobs, reducing social and economic inequalities, and establishing collective and local institutions.

Since 2014, the Luiss Community Garden has been active on the Viale Romania Campus. It’s a space open to students, faculty, administrative staff, volunteers from neighborhood associations, children from local schools, and the community. The goal is to foster social interaction among different groups through hands-on work in nature, creating a model of a participatory community that benefits both individuals and the environment. Finally, Luiss promotes volunteer activities that, over the past seven years, have engaged approximately 5,000 young people in 30 projects with a strong practical, ethical, and social impact, as well as around 70 programs focused on Ethics, Responsibility, and Sustainability.
