"Luiss Researcher Antonio Calcara receives the 2019 Global Strategy PhD Award"
The award was presented for the thesis "The Decision-Making Dilemma of Arms Procurement Policy"
Luiss Researcher Antonio Calcara received the “Global Strategy PhD 2019” Award, presented by the Egmon Royal Institute for International Relations and the European Security and Defense College (ESDC), for his thesis “The Decision-Making Dilemma of Arms Procurement Policy.
” “The work focuses on cooperation projects undertaken within the framework of European defense policies. It's a comparative study of four countries: Italy, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom,” Calcara explained. The jury, chaired by Professor Sven Biscop, appreciated the political relevance of the research project and its innovative theoretical framework, which combines different disciplines: economics, security studies, and international relations.
The thesis, which was defended at Luiss in June 2019, required years of structured and in-depth research. “I started my project in 2015 in Rome, then continued the work in Norway thanks to a grant from the European Commission, and finally in Brussels, where I conducted interviews and field research,” Calcara added.
Antonio is currently a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Luiss Department of Political Science, a Professor at Vesalius College at the Vrije Universiteit Brussels , and a Visiting Professor at SciencesPo in Paris. “My thesis will be published in March 2020,” he concluded. “This is a significant recognition, especially considering the sacrifices I made for this research. My dream is to become a professor and thus continue working within the academic world.”
