Instructional goals

The objective of the course is to develop in real beginners a basic communicative competence in the language along with strategies for understanding authentic texts related to the area of international relations, political and administrative institutions, and current events. The focus on specialized language aims to enable students to use the language in professional contexts.

Prerequisites

Liv. A1.1

Intended learning outcomes

The study of authentic texts carried out in the classroom includes: reading (phonetics); the “repérage” (identification) of grammatical, lexical and semantic phrases; and the gradual reformulation of the meaning of the text along with students' comments. In this way, also oral communication skills are developed. At the same time, students learn the structure of the language through extensive explanations by the course professor and focused grammar exercises. Through activities which involve, role plays, and the creation of glossaries based on autonomous reading, students consolidate their grammatical competence and enrich their specialized and professional vocabulary, at the same time as they further develop their communication skills and intercultural strategies for specific professional contexts.

Course Contents

1) Basic or pre-intermediate grammar; 2) Terminology related to the students' fields of study (international relations, political and administrative institutions, and institutional communication) through reading and discussing topics regarding: international institutions, geopolitical issues, political and administrative institutions (Europe, France, Italy), current events on socio-political and economic issues, and communication and the media. This is a blended learning course: the interactive learning in the classroom is combined with autonomous study, which also involves accessing authentic written and spoken texts online.
