Luiss in the fight against gender-based violence

luiss against violence gender based

On the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, Luiss Guido Carli reaffirms its commitment to fostering a culture of respect and responsibility, and to combating all forms of gender-based violence. According to the initial 2025 ISTAT data, nearly one in three women (31.9%) between the ages of 16 and 75 has experienced physical or sexual violence at least once in their lifetime. Femicides, with over 100 victims recorded in Italy in 2024, remain one of the most dramatic manifestations of the phenomenon. This situation underscores the need for concrete action, ongoing awareness, and support for those affected—commitments that Luiss fulfills through events, educational projects, and initiatives open to the community.

“Femicide: news, sentences, and silence”: the discussion at the university

On November 25, the Language Café on the Viale Romania campus hosted the event “Femicide: News, Sentences, and Silences,” which focused on analyzing narratives, social responsibilities, and the critical issues within the protection system.
The speakers included:

  • Emiliana De Blasio, Advisor for Diversity, Inclusion, and Sustainability, Luiss
Rosalba Belmonte, Professor of Sociology of Political Phenomena and co-author of the book Sopravvissute. Violence as told by women
  • Francesca Mesiti, lawyer, vice president and co-founder of the Oltre Association, and author of the book “Parità di genere incompiuta: un percorso a ostacoli dal pane alle rose”
  • Maria Lucia Rotondi, lawyer and Lazio Region representative for the OLGA Association – Educating against all forms of violence

Luiss joins the United Nations campaign “Orange the World – UNiTE to End Violence Against Women”

The University is taking part in the global campaign “Orange the World,” promoted by UN Women and coordinated in Italy by the UN Women Italy Committee. The initiative kicked off with key locations on the Viale Pola and Viale Romania campuses lit up in orange, followed by awareness-raising activities on social media aimed at:

  • raise awareness about gender-based violence
  • engage students, faculty, and staff
  • amplify the international message against violence against women.

A commitment that continues year-round

Through these initiatives, Luiss reaffirms its active role in building a society that is increasingly aware and inclusive. This commitment doesn't end on November 25th; rather, it translates into daily projects, educational activities, and concrete actions to promote gender equality, women's rights, and the fight against violence.
