Fragments of Abandoned Italy

A journey to discover places forgotten and worn away by time

March 16, 2018 – April 20, 2018
Opening on Thursday, March 15, 2018, at 7:00 PM – Room 200, Viale Romania 32

On Thursday, March 15, 2018, the collective photo exhibition “Frammenti di Italia Abbandonata” opens in Room 200 at Viale Romania 32, sponsored by LUISS Cultural Activities

The exhibition features fifteen photographs by three urban explorers: Stefano Barattini, Eleonora Costi , and Flavio Facibeni. The photos come from the social promotion association Italia Abbandonata, a project created in 2015 by two LUISS students, Francesco De Simone and Alessandro Santocono. Through Instagram, they collect photographs of inaccessible spaces to bring to light fragments of stories, past lives, and places that have been lived in.

“Leave only footprints, take only emotions” is the motto of those who practice abandonment photography. It requires a deep respect for the places they visit: dilapidated buildings, disused factories, former psychiatric hospitals, and abandoned villas whose coordinates remain secret to protect them from theft and vandalism.

The photographers

Stefano Barattini

1958, Milan. His first photos date back to 1979, when he began traveling and inextricably linked photography to travel. For several years, he collaborated with magazines specializing in the world of cars, publishing numerous photo features. For about four years, his photographs have focused on abandoned places. In 2017, he won first prize in the urban exploration category of the Città di Mortara competition. She has had numerous publications, solo exhibitions, and collaborations with NPA – Nikon Photographers Advanced.

Eleonora Costi

Born in 1989 in Milan, she initially worked as a fashion and event photographer before specializing in social documentary photography. From her passion for urbex-urban exploration comes Abandoned H. Ell, a project that uses photography to tell the story of Italy’s abandoned places, places brimming with history and lived experiences: from houses still furnished with large, frescoed living rooms to former psychiatric hospitals, from churches and social clubs to boarding schools and monasteries. She publishes in various national and international publications, organizes solo exhibitions, and participates in photography competitions. In 2016, she won the LYNX 2016 International Prize for Contemporary Art.

Flavio Facibeni

1981, Forlì. He first discovered photography through his father. He immediately developed a passion for nature, landscape, and night photography. He captures the diverse landscape that defines his region, Romagna. In 2014, he became a professional photographer and urban explorer. He exhibits in London at the prestigious Brick Lane Gallery and in Venice for the Mazzoleni Onlus Foundation.

On the opening day, registration is required for the general public.

The exhibition is open to the public through April 20, 2018. Reservations can be made Monday through Friday:
