Academic year 2006-2007: a summer fairy tale

Snapshots directed by Ferdinando Ceriani

A difficult year. A painful one. Traumatic. A turning point for our Workshop. In the middle of the year, I lost my friend and collaborator, Angelo Guidi. We decide to move the show from the Valle to the gardens at the Viale Pola location. At first, the news disappoints the students, who are now used to performing in large theaters. They have no idea what I have in mind! Carla Ferraro, who handles character development, singing, and choreography throughout the year, and Alice Guidi, an essential pillar of our workshop and Angelo’s niece, step in and have remained by my side ever since. With the support of Beatriz Villagrasa, we transform the space in front of the Sala delle Colonne into a charming open-air stage. Amidst the fountains and hedges, under a starry sky, our “theatrical fairy tales” come to life, and the choice of location is also met with great approval. Playing at home, we transition from the one-off performance at the Teatro Valle, where everything was done in just a few hours, to the ease of three evening performances. At the end of the first performance, the image of the shadows of the young performers dancing and singing among the trees, illuminated by the stage lights.

Tornan la notte ad ardere le favole locandina dettaglio

Academic year 2006-2007: a summer fairy tale

Loosely based on Aristophanes' Lysistrata, William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, Edmond Rostand's Cyrano de Bergerac, Albert Camus' Caligula, Oscar Wilde's Salomé, Bertolt Brecht's Galileo, and the poetry of Gibran, Ungaretti, Merini, Di Giacomo, Scandurra, Jimenez, Carducci, and Prévert. Ten years of theater workshop are an important, prestigious, and significant achievement. They are a testament to the enduring love and passion that, over the years, has brought together hundreds of university students and engaged teachers, actors, and directors in theatrical endeavors spanning the classics to contemporary authors, from the avant-garde to the great masters of European dramaturgy, with William Shakespeare at the forefront. Ten years of work call for thanks. First of all, my deepest thanks go to the students who strongly desired this theater course (it was born from the will of a group of “pioneers”) and have nurtured it over time with their enthusiasm and participation. Then, to LUISS Guido Carli University, which has taken on this course, embracing its initiatives and proposals and always showing it special attention. And, as for me, I thank the people who have been close to me in these “first” five years of directing: Patrizia Ziino, Tiziana Tettoni, Anna Montani, and now Beatriz Villagrasa, in whom I have found inspiring enthusiasm and collaboration. Tornan la notte ad ardere le favole is a light, “summery” theatrical fairy tale. It blends some of the most beautiful theatrical and poetic texts from our culture, selected by Angelo Guidi, and unfolds in a series of theatrical scenes that alternate between drama and comedy, all to the syncopated rhythm of jazz by Louis Armstrong, Sydney Bechet, Duke Ellington, and Count Basie. This show, like those of previous years, was conceived and developed by Angelo Guidi and me. Today, Angelo is no longer with us. I dedicate these three evenings to him, and I extend my deepest thanks to him for everything he has given me, and has given us, over these years. Thank you, Angelo.
